When to move chicks to general population

I just came in to ask the same question only my situation is a little different. I have 15 5-week old chicks (5 buffs, 5 astrolorps, 5 LIreds) to be added to my older "flock" of 1 easter-egger layer, 1 ee rooster and one barred rock. And the barred rock is broody, hasn't been off her nest in two...

Help! Giant Cochin Rooster or Hen?

I'd love help too please My friend gave me this beauty because we think he's a rooster and she has too many. But he doesn't crow, he's shy and is not interested in the hens... probably about 7 months old. Here are pix: Thank you!

What do you feed meat Broilers?

Uh, yeah. I leave out the Monsanto part because it confuses the issue. We are as GMO-free as we can be :) Today, we just got our second batch of non-GMO broiler chicks from Freedom Ranger Hatchery. They are as beautiful as the first batch: shiny fur, chubby, ACTIVE. These are our fourth and...

    GMO-Free chicks

We will have our first batch next week. We've done both Freedom Rangers and CX. I like the flavor and fat of the CX more and was going to get those again. But the FRs were delicoous, too, and I loved the non-GMO option. That's what put me over the edge. I will report back :)

    GMO-Free chicks

I was talking about the apples. But you are right about the honey so I stand corrected on that definition. Bottom line, after all my research, I don't consider genetically modified food real food. In fact, at this point in my life, if it didn't appear on my grandmother's plate, I don't eat it...

    GMO-Free chicks

Check your info on golden rice. It's incorrect. Food that can be stored forever is not technically food. And I'd revisit http://www.gmoseralini.org/en/.

    GMO-Free chicks

Haha, you gave yourself away by being so insulting. Tells me you have a dog in the fight. Who in your family grows GM crops receiving fat subsidy benefits? Or works for a GM tech company? Because anyone who researches GMOs -- which I've been doing for the last 8 years -- knows how dangerous they...

    GMO-Free chicks

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this but I just ordered broilers and found these: https://www.freedomrangerhatchery.com/freedom-ranger-chickens.asp Ordered two batches of 25 -- that's enough killing for one day for this family. Hopefully they'll do well. That's all I'm ordering from now on...

    Meat bird breeds

Can you share that post with me? I'd love to read it. This year we are tractoring our CX. But I'd like to free range next year if we can work out the fencing -- need to keep all my birds with my Great Pyrenees. Live way out in the country and predators can be a problem with true free ranging...

    Black Soldier Fly composter

Great info here! About how much quail droppings/table scraps do you add per day? Like 1 cup, 5 cups, a gallon...? Thanks!

    Salmonella and chicks

If your chicks ever do have/get salmonella, is there a way to rid them of it? Preferably without antibiotics.

    Kentucky people

Our biggest problem has been with raccoons (when we lived in a suburb in Lexington) and a neighbor's dogs. We got our own dogs and the neighbor's dogs stay away. Opossums are pretty cool creatures, actually. They are marsupials which is pretty neat. http://opossum.org/ I don't think they eat...

    FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

Wow, thanks, Beekissed! Just exactly what I needed to at least get started.
