I just came in to ask the same question only my situation is a little different. I have 15 5-week old chicks (5 buffs, 5 astrolorps, 5 LIreds) to be added to my older "flock" of 1 easter-egger layer, 1 ee rooster and one barred rock. And the barred rock is broody, hasn't been off her nest in two...
I'd love help too please My friend gave me this beauty because we think he's a rooster and she has too many. But he doesn't crow, he's shy and is not interested in the hens... probably about 7 months old. Here are pix:
Thank you!
Uh, yeah. I leave out the Monsanto part because it confuses the issue. We are as GMO-free as we can be :)
Today, we just got our second batch of non-GMO broiler chicks from Freedom Ranger Hatchery. They are as beautiful as the first batch: shiny fur, chubby, ACTIVE. These are our fourth and...
We will have our first batch next week. We've done both Freedom Rangers and CX. I like the flavor and fat of the CX more and was going to get those again. But the FRs were delicoous, too, and I loved the non-GMO option. That's what put me over the edge. I will report back :)
I was talking about the apples. But you are right about the honey so I stand corrected on that definition. Bottom line, after all my research, I don't consider genetically modified food real food. In fact, at this point in my life, if it didn't appear on my grandmother's plate, I don't eat it...
Check your info on golden rice. It's incorrect. Food that can be stored forever is not technically food. And I'd revisit http://www.gmoseralini.org/en/.
Haha, you gave yourself away by being so insulting. Tells me you have a dog in the fight. Who in your family grows GM crops receiving fat subsidy benefits? Or works for a GM tech company? Because anyone who researches GMOs -- which I've been doing for the last 8 years -- knows how dangerous they...
Don't know if anyone has mentioned this but I just ordered broilers and found these:
https://www.freedomrangerhatchery.com/freedom-ranger-chickens.asp
Ordered two batches of 25 -- that's enough killing for one day for this family. Hopefully they'll do well. That's all I'm ordering from now on...
Can you share that post with me? I'd love to read it. This year we are tractoring our CX. But I'd like to free range next year if we can work out the fencing -- need to keep all my birds with my Great Pyrenees. Live way out in the country and predators can be a problem with true free ranging...
I'm near Morehead, new to these parts. originally from Winchester. We have 25 Aurucanas, 1 Austrolorp, 1 Plymouth Rock rooster and 3 mixed chicks. And two gigantic Great Pyreneees :)
Our biggest problem has been with raccoons (when we lived in a suburb in Lexington) and a neighbor's dogs. We got our own dogs and the neighbor's dogs stay away.
Opossums are pretty cool creatures, actually. They are marsupials which is pretty neat. http://opossum.org/ I don't think they eat...
I have no idea if they will go inside when it gets too cold or if they need to -- they generate a good amount of body heat. But when mine suddenly started sleeping on the roof and in nearby trees, I went out every night once they were settled (it was never quite dark) and put them in the coop...
We are going to start fermenting our chicken feed. This thread started in 2012 and goes for 150 pages. I'm not sure I can read all that and be sane at the end. Any chance you could link to an instructional blog post that picks up the best of this thread for us newbies? I'm going to dive in...
We've had chickens for a few years but this is our first winter with Aurucanas. Not a single egg in almost two weeks. They've been laying great all summer. What the heck??? Nothing has changed, same food, water, etc. There are 26 layers and 2 roosters (and 3 chicks so they were laying, lol.)...
Here's a great thread on the topic: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/how-to-raise-mealworms
And here's where I will buy mine: http://www.westknollfarm.com/Meal-Worms.html
The downside to garbage cans/bags is that you need a lot more ice than if we had used coolers. Keeping them as cold as they need to be is much harder in the garbage bags. Lesson learned for next time...
