We may not know which came first...

...but now we know where they came from! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/9432623/All-chickens-descend-from-south-east-Asia.html

Thanks all for the nice comments! Unfortunately, just yesterday, Dahlia passed away :( No signs of any problems or predation, just went in her sleep.

Thanks, poultryman, still working out the kinks I discover as I go along :) dianabel: It sure sounds like it but I'm not a duck man yet! YET!

    Gut Loaded Meal Worms

Big and juicy meal worms for sale!!! The price of mealworms got to be too ridiculous so I started raising them myself and now I usually have WAY too many. I try to feed these worms well as what goes in to them also goes into the chickens - wheat bran, oat bran, apples, bananas, carrots...

Austin, TX: Does anyone here TRULY know how many hens you may keep?

Me too, I love the sound personally but I know that's a unique perspective. What part of Austin do you live in? I'm near the DPS so it's not a "tranquil" area but the sound of roosters would definitely be noticed.

Austin, TX: Does anyone here TRULY know how many hens you may keep?

Toe with scales missing, pink and smooth

Not the best picture but I think you can see what I mean. We noticed it a few days ago. She doesn't seem to be hurt or favoring it in any way, just wondering if this is a sign of something else... Anyone?

    For Those Observing Lent

Lent is a time of penitence and the words of Psalm 51 are used here asking "Lord, have mercy on me." Whoever wrote the Wiki article on the Miserere did a good job too.

Just starting out? We are looking to get started raising chickens and we have some questions.

Brahmamama said it well, and welcome to the weird wonderful world of chickens! Two chickens per person (looks like 8 for you?) is the standard formula if you each want to eat eggs every day, but a minimum of two or three if you're just testing the waters! Good luck!

    For Those Observing Lent

One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written, it's a good way to start Ash Wednesday (and my first day of NO EGGS until Holy Week!):

    Valentine's Eggs

Thanks! Found the link to this on another chicken forum on FB - http://www.annathered.com/2010/09/29/how-to-make-a-heart-shaped-egg/ Mine aren't nearly as nice as the ones in the example but I'm sure it took a bunch of times to prefect it.
