When to butcher barnyard mix excess roos?

We do 24-28 weeks. I don't find the meat tough if you are patient and let the meat rest, or if needed, break the rigor. We restricted pen size from 12 weeks to 24 weeks with a nice 4 grain scratch in with their normal grower feed and you get a decent bird at 24-28 weeks of age.

    Sex- linked Information

I must have been drunk when I made this post. LOL Because I have been making sex links for some time now, but I think I was asking for additional female options, as I find Silver Laced Wyandottes not as hardy. But I will look it over again and maybe try to source something else for my Sexed Red...

The last 4 years I have been breeding RIR over Barred Rocks for my Black Sex Links, and my RIR over my Silver Laced Wyandottes for Red Sex Links. I am finding that my SLW's are a bit.... fragile. Frusteratingly so. Looking for another alternitive for Reds. I have also been doing some Sex Linked...

Azure Hatching Eggs and Blue Quail Eggs?

Yup, they are selling them 16-17 dollars per hen.. Look like a leghorn mix... I am wondering if this is a mix bird, they are calling it a breed, but I am highly suspicious of it. A commercial operation selling for 16-17 per Point of Lay bird, isn't honestly that bad, but.. meh. I'v been selling...

    Amprolium Questions

How warm is it where you are? In warm weather, watery droppings can be caused by increased intake of water as well. Is heat stress a possibility?

    Amprolium Questions

1 Yes, Coccidiosis does not always present with blood in the stool. In Most cases it does. 2 Any vet can chcck for coccidiosis. As it is a protozoa, it is found in pretty much every animal, dogs and cats included. 3 Battery hens can be problematic because of a few reasons, but one of them is...

    Declining Hatchery Quality Birds?

You are not the only ones. Hatcheries breed for money, they don't care about the SoP or anything. Even auto-sexing breeds are totally under attack at commercial hatcheries. I know someone that purchased some Legbars and their autosexing traits were pretty much Nill. I'll put it this way - The...

    Mold - advice needed please

So - I did something stupid. I was having issues with my Hovabator, set it up to run, then decided to buy two new incubators. Been running the new incubators for a couple months now. Working perfectly. I got the brilliant (stupid) idea of putting my turner from my Hovabator (a manual one) into...

    Bovan Red, Black, Brown??

Actually, it is my experience that a simple Sex Link is NOT (Using 2 Heritage Breeds) do not create the 'Egg Laying Machines' that you can get from a say a feed store that is classified as an Commercial Layer. When Layers are created, the companies use a complex mix, (typically it is a mix they...

Anyone have luck hatching jumbo Chicken eggs?

I know that this is an older thread, but I think it is quite important about egg sizes and incubation. Something that gets asked a lot. I simply won't. It is just a factor that I don't consider when I am wanting decent hatch rates. Hatching out a normal sized egg for the breed is always a good...

BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

Haha, still using this SAME crib after 5 years. Though I use a tarp inside as a full liner these days.. much easier. This thing has seen many babies! lol The far end (I use an indoor/outdoor Dog heating pad) So that is why you don't see a heating source. It is UNDER the tarp. Works...

    Sex- linked Information

Thanks for that information! I have gotten pretty good at knowing what I was looking for with my sex link crosses, but.. I had a situation where my Blue Wheaten got into my RIR over Plym. Barred Rocks Pen. I kept my Blue Wheaten to put over my White layers.(Which are not sex link, but the layers...
