3-day old chick standing on one leg

Sad to say, I ended up euthanizing the chick yesterday. Although we were able to make some headway in getting the cracks healed on her feet, they would then just re-crack and start all over again. She was wasting away, spending all day cheeping on one leg or crouching, starving to death, so it...

3-day old chick standing on one leg

Although her foot cracks are definitely healing up, I'm still not sure she's going to make it. She's not eating much and spending most of her time crouching or lying on the ground. And the still only standing on one leg when she gets up. It may be that her genetic issues are too much to...

3-day old chick standing on one leg

This chick loves her little spa treatments! My 10yo son has taken it upon himself to take good care of her every time. The cool water seems to feel good, because the chick always relaxes when he puts her feet in the calendula-water. :)

3-day old chick standing on one leg

Update: Our treatment of the chick's foot cracks is going well thus far. The cracks are healing up and not nearly so deep now as they were two days ago. They are still obviously causing some discomfort for the chick, but things are looking up! We're treating with two homeopathic remedies to...

3-day old chick standing on one leg

Yes, the local HorseNHound store here is supplied by Privett Hatchery. We've gotten EEs from there before with no issues, but that was ~4 years ago, so maybe they've had more issues develop since then. I'm surprised the various hatcheries don't have some sort of exchange program going so they...

3-day old chick standing on one leg

Thank you both for taking time to ponder on this strange issue, @azygous and @Eggcessive. Yeah, I'm not using the Epsom salts. I actually never did, because her feet were cracked when I first looked at them in the morning and I thought it would hurt. It is not hot at all where the chicks have...

3-day old chick standing on one leg

Well, shoot. This morning, both of her feet are cracked on the bottom, and she's cheeping a lot, standing on one foot/not wanting to stand. Really not sure what to do at this point. Any ideas as to why this is happening or what to do? The other 10 chicks we have are all doing great.... :\

The bedding is sand covered with dry leaves (sort of like a miniature deep litter). But whenever it is warm, the chicks are outside in grass and sunlight all day. I'll keep you posted on how things go.

3-day old chick standing on one leg

No I don't have Nutri-drench, but after looking at it's nutrients, it looks like I could probably achieve a similar effect by giving a small amount of our extra virgin cod liver oil which has a similar nutrient profile. I also always include raw milk kefir in my chick feed, which should supply...

Hmmm, interesting! We'll give it a whirl and see how things go!

3-day old chick standing on one leg

I wasn't able to find anything different from the chick's left vs right legs/feet today. She is still running around/eating like normal, especially in the early day, but then goes to standing on one foot and cheeping more in the late afternoon/evening. She will still walk around then and eat...

3-day old chick standing on one leg

I hear you and agree. Inspection in strong light hasn't revealed any difference at all between the left and right legs (the left doesn't look bruised compared to the right one, the picture just looked funky because of lighting). That's a great idea to try using a magnifying lens to see if I...

3-day old chick standing on one leg

Hmmm, I'm still not sure what the issue is: This morning, the chick was running around vigorously just like the others, eating, scratching, etc, and using both legs equally. Now, by mid-afternoon, she is again spending a lot of standing on one leg only and cheeping. But she only stands on one...

@azygous: thanks so much!!! Will try treating the little black spot on the toe and let you know how it goes!

3-day old chick standing on one leg

Hi there. We've got a 3-day old chick who is standing on one leg. She cheeps a lot (and louder) than the other chicks. She can extend the leg and occasionally will put some weight on it, but then she goes back to standing on one leg. She does NOT stand with her legs splayed when she does put...
