    Purring pullet !!??

I noticed that one of my pullets (12 weeks old) had a bit of blood running down from her eye onto her beak. It looks like she's been pecked in the eye. Anyway, I picked her up to get a close up look and as she snuggled into me it sounded like she was purring!! It also looked like she has a runny...

Hen or not?? And breed help if possible

Thanks Donrae, I did indeed get 2 more goldlines (from a different breeder but I knew what I was looking for this time ). My 2 new hens are the same age as mine and almost identical. The only difference is my original 2 have yellow legs and the new girls have white legs!?

    Roosters and children

I agree Speckled Hen, we were lucky that the rooster only got my son on the white of the eye and not the iris or retina. Unfortunately, we were told we were buying 4 pullets and as we are new to chicken keeping was somewhat naive. I assumed the breeder would know what she was talking about. The...

Hen or not?? And breed help if possible

Thank you for the explanation Donrae. It makes sense now that I've read it like that! The 2 cockerels have now been rehomed so that is not an issue any more thankfully. Although, both children were very sad to see them go. I left a message for the breeder but she has not got back to me. My guess...

    Roosters and children

Thanks Green Eggs, I'm in the UK so don't think the buy sell trade bit will be good for me. I had someone come and pick up the 2 cockerels today so they'll be happy free ranging somewhere and my kids are safe. Now trying to find 2 hens to replace them. Harder than it sounds where I live

    Roosters and children

Wow, I started writing and by the time I finished there's loads more posts. Thank you all for your replies. Didn't realise Cockerels could do that much damage. Maybe I've gone into this a little naive. I'm not bothered about having a cockerel even a nice natured one. But I will definitely be...

    Roosters and children

Thank you both. I was hoping that maybe they could be trained in some way. Being new to chicken keeping I haven't got the stomach for 'getting rid.' Have kept both kids away from the pen. I'll try and advertise but I don't think anyone will be interested in them due to their aggressive nature...

    Roosters and children

Hi everyone, I'm new to chicken keeping and was told I was buying 4 hens. Turns out I have 2 hens and 2 roosters, aggressive ones at that. We assumed they were sorting out pecking order until they started attacking us. One pecked my 5 year old son in the eye (luckily missing his retina), one...

Hen or not?? And breed help if possible

Thank you so much for your help. I was assured that all 4 had been checked and were definitely hens! Oh dear . Now to start a new thread for advice on keeping cockerels with children!

Hen or not?? And breed help if possible

Thank you, I had a thought that the 2 whites were possibly Leghorn mixes. What is a red sex link? Is that an American term? I was confused by roos until I saw rooster . We call them cockerels over here

Hen or not?? And breed help if possible

I am new to chickens and bought 4 girls (8weeks old). I've had them 3 weeks now and the 2 white ones (Lulu and Betty) are getting progressively worse with pecking. We first put it down to them sorting out the pecking order but last week Lulu pecked my son in the eye, they both constantly peck me...
