If you google pinless peepers, it'll list online companies that sell them. I checked ebay and bought a pack of 10 and it included a nice pair of backwards pliers to ease putting them on.
So my year old red hen thinks she is the rooster. (I don't have one) and has been bullying the girls. When I finally figured out which one it was, I put her in her own stall and told her she was dinner. Well, the next morning there was a beautiful egg waiting for me next to the door. So I...
I have a mix, Barred Rock, Black sexlink, Australorp, and Reds. I saw a dark red hen on top, and I only have 4 of those. Maybe I could quarantine those 4 and keep a closer watch? I have 31 hens total.
I got rid of my rooster last summer because he had become really mean, towards the hens and my family. He would pull the feathers from the tops of their heads and their poor little backs were bald.
I have noticed in the last few weeks that the girls are again losing feathers on heads and...
I feel for you man......had a redtail eat one of my hens two days ago. Can't put my net up with all the snow we've been getting off and on, and feel bad to keep the girls locked in for too many days in a row. I know it's the chance, letting them out, but we've been pretty good so far. I kept...
I think it's possible that the purple martins may have kept it away, but hard to tell since I keep the net up in summer. Those purple martins sure can get aggressive though. I was in the barn an afternoon last summer and that mama bird decided she didn't want me in the aisleway. Nearly took...
If its the fluffy feathers under the tail, I would check for lice. Some of my girls started losing those feathers last winter when it wasn't as cold as it should have been. I dusted them with Sevin, 3 times, spaced out 10 days. Not all of my chickens had a problem either.
We have an old post & beam barn (1846) and the barn swallows and purple martins show up each spring and leave each fall. This is when we know the end and start of winter. It's like one day they all show up and then one day they're gone. I have seen them chase the hawks. There's a mating pair...
This buff is quite friendly. She only puts up a fuss when I take "her" eggs. I put 4 wooden ones under her tonight when I took the real eggs out. Hopefully this will keep her sitting for another week until the chicks arrive.
I gave in and ordered the Meyer production 25 with free shipping :) I have two other people going in on the order with me. I have a Buff Brahma that's been broody for about two weeks now. The shipment is for July 9th. If she is still broody at the time, do you think I could give her the...
The biggest male has really been fighting with another male lower in line. Not to the point of blood, but he chases him a lot, especially at coop time (when it gets dark) 2 nights ago, they were running around the field and wouldn't come in. At dark, they were nowhere to be found. I thought...
My son loves to collect the eggs. When he was 3, one of our hens jumped up and pecked him on the lip, causing it to bleed. I did not blame the hen......I blamed myself. It could have easily been his eye! From then on, I made sure he wore safety glasses and his tall boots.
