Bought what I thought was 4 pullets from Tractor Supply. Already gave one away because he started crowing. I have three more and still hear crowing. Now I'm beginning to think all of them are roosters. Can someone help?
We just switched to crumbles for the sake of some of our smaller chickens, but I like pellets much better. There seems to be a good bit of waste when dealing with crumbles. I also like Purina Layena Plus Omega-3 which I don't think comes in a crumble.
I'm having some back issues right now, and picking up heavy posts and setting them in the ground or dealing with large wire rolls of fencing is not really an option for me right now. My chickens free-range in a fenced-in backyard and go in the coop at night. This has worked fine for months...
I do have some cream legbars that are fairly flighty. The slightest noise and they run for the bushes. The Buffs are much less so, and the silkies are oblivious. I did see on the hawk thread that someone put raven decoys in their yard and that worked well. The reviews on the owl decoys along...
Yeah, someone else mentioned getting an owl decoy, that'll be something I look into. I also do have a coop/run set up now that they are in every day. They just don't seem particularly happy while in it.
I am thinking of trying to just let my 4 chickens and 3 silkies just free range in my backyard. I'd lock them up at night, and just let them roam during the day while I'm at work. We have a fairly big backyard, they don't seem to be doing much damage (I fence areas they shouldn't be in like...
Thanks for all the replies, some really great info here. I did start by just sprinkling it on the ground, but as a couple of people said, I had no idea how much they were getting or really how much was available, so I couldn't decide if I was putting out too much or too little. Maybe once it's...
So, after reading through some advice here, I decided to keep continue feeding start/grow to my hens that should be laying any day now. I read that I should simply offer oyster shell (or equivalent) free choice and the non-laying hens will simply not eat it. My problem is, I'm not sure what to...
Started with 3 silkie chicks from a rather questionable source to me, but my wife was already sold before we stepped out of the car. We learned a hard lesson within a week, 2 of the 3 have died. Hard for us to say from what, we had them on medicated feed and a couple of days after we got them...
Yep, great thread, I was just wondering this as well. Most things I read say 6 weeks, but I'm assuming that is because they have no idea about your specific situation. 70 is the low here at night, with the highs in the 90s, so I think I'm going to go ahead and put my 4 week old chicks in the...
I'd love to somehow figure out a chicken tractor that could connect to my current setup so I could keep them on fresh grass. I'm a lot more interested in how to lower the daily maintenance at this point so that I'm sure I can give them what they need through thick and thin.
As far as the...
So, we started with 2 chickens (Buff Orpingtons) that really grew on us. When we built the coop for them, I had planned on getting 2 more mostly because everyone told me I would. So I build an A-frame coop/run that had 36 square feet in the run and 24 square feet in the covered coop. We now...
Sorry to bump an old thread, but this is exactly the kind of solution I was looking for. I have a connected coop and run, but I would like to put the waterer and feed in the run for easy access. I was concerned about the waterer getting too hot, but a reflective material would probably do the...
