A few questions for those of you who are experienced in hatching:
First, I am using the typical home-made incubator that I made following plans here on BYC, using an old cooler. I have hooked up an automatic turner inside, and it is forced air. I have had excellent success in the past with...
Well, I've had 8 out of 9 hatch. The last one hasn't pipped yet, but this evening was Day 21, so I'll give it at least till Sunday night. All 8 that hatched seem to be kicking around well. I was going to post pics tonight, but I'll have to wait until the weekend. Somehow I have to get a coop...
Well....."Speedy" has hatched! Less than 6 hours from pip to hatch!!! All other eggs have pipped except for the EE's. It's gonna be a long night..........
Well, I got home from work to find 4 additional pips. The first one from this morning has not went any further. I'm hoping it's just resting alot. It is the smallest egg in the batch and I've been worried that it may be too weak to push out.
On the other hand I have a RIR that seemingly...
<snip> Yes I know they are dirty eggs but they were free and I am NOT complaining.. <snip>
Nothing wrong with a little dirt on the eggs - it happens in the coop all the time. Mine were the same way (free and dirty). They're developing just fine. No pips yet, but I'm not expecting any "early"...
Lockdown!!! Humidity up to 75% and temps holding steady. I have nine eggs set - 4 RIR's 2 EE's & 3 Anconas(?) possible barnyard mix). Anyone else ever put the eggs in cupcake liners to help minimize them rolling all over the place?
My son is all excited about this (he is autistic & 18 years...
Gettin' a little nervous myself. First time hatching, and tomorrow evening I'm scheduled to go into lockdown. Using my own home-made incubator built from a cooler. Temps have held great since i set them, and humidity has not went above 49&. I was able to hold it at 70% + during my test phase, so...
First time for us - we picked up 6 Buff Orpingtons on Monday. My son (who is autistic) has had a great time watching them in the brooder (um, yeah, they're in the living room) and holding them. Planning on this to be a learning experience for him and to teach him some more responsibility in...
Set my first batch of eggs tonight - I've had my homemade incubator going for over two weeks, but now that I have eggs in it I keep questioning every little thing about it. Here's hoping all our hatches come out great.

Finally got the images uploaded. I had to cut two whole trays off to get everything to...
Thanks to everyone's responses. I have purchased a Little Giant Egg Turner and removed two of the rails. I now have it in the incubator going through a test run. I still need to install the CPU fan, but that will have to wait 'till tomorrow night. I'll try post a few pictures before the end of...
Hey all,
I've searched around but haven't been able to find this answer - has anyone made modifications to an automatic egg turner so it would fit into a home-made incubator made out of a cooler? I am almost finished with my home-made incubator and was wondering if anyone had already tried...
Hey all,
I was searching around to see if this question I been raised before. I was wondering if the peat moss might be used in place of the DE I have read about? The peat moss is actually pretty cheap when compared to DE - I used a lot of it for starting seedlings, and you can usually pick...
