I freeze large jugs of water (old cranberry jugs, vodka jugs [from making extracts of flowers and pollens], milk jugs...) and put them in the shade of the run for mine. You have to alternate a few times a day, but it cools the area and it has been a literal life saver.

    Squishy egg within egg

She is not weak or mopey. She is staying out of the sun, but so am I. I will read the links provided and give her some tums. Thanks!

    Squishy egg within egg

I found this while looking for my evening eggs about 15 min ago. Each layer revealed a new egg-thing. I hang out with my flock multiple times a day and no egg is left in there over an hour. The one who laid this is one of the leghorn cross "Ideal" hens. She is almost 3 years old. She eats Layena...

Is it gleet or another tushy trouble?

I wish I were making this up. Ruby was doing swell. I was watching them from my window because that's my version of cable. I was merrily sipping my tea. Ruby was packing and scratching away at an interesting bunch of pebbles. A white crane (the long legged water bird) came down as if to get...

Is it gleet or another tushy trouble?

My year old black broiler from Ideal Poultry has a not-so-fluffy butt. It does not stink, per se. It smells like a chicken butt. Not a foul chicken butt. She is on purina layer feed (and greens, bugs, sometimes a nibble at dog kibble). It has been in the 90s as far as weather. She is my...

Ideal Hatchery Black Broiler: honest review

They arent advertised as dual purpose, but mine are proving themselves to be that. Breast is full, but I have kept mine on Turkey starter until 8 weeks. They are not as big as a cornishX, but they are much more hardy. I would say on average they are 2 lbs shy of cornish weight. My only concern...

Ideal Hatchery Black Broiler: honest review

No, but maybe large. I get one a day from each of them. As a side note, they are ridiculously flirty with my rooster all of a sudden. They peck him to get attention, make him chase them, then "assume the position," regardless of if he's ready. I dont think anyone should have trouble getting...

Ideal Hatchery Black Broiler: honest review

I haven't ordered a baby roo yet to try. I first wanted to see how well the girls survived the summer. According to the hatchery, they breed true. I just didn't want to breed any chickens that would struggle during the heat.

I will see if I can post a picture. We are having hell-storms and my ability to use internet is questionable.

    Random Chicken Drop Off

One thing I have seen in an undying pattern is that neighbors like yours end up moving away when you least expect it. Or, in the case of the neighbor that used to scream at me because I put my trash out early in the evening the day before pick-up... catch a crazy weird fungus in the brain and...

    Random Chicken Drop Off

Yes. All manner of animals, including turtles and pet rats in an aquarium. I love rats (conversation for a different time) but there is a reason they are used in medical research (HINT: not because they are hardy against diseases). I resolved the worst parts of this problem by leaving travel...
