We've had our guesses on this beautiful 19 week old SS. No crowing yet, but I'm pretty sure she is more likely a he. Those saddle and tail feathers are just too male looking.
Really sucks because I really really like her/him, but we can't have roosters. We were supposed to get 2 SS chicks back...
Wow! That was an amazing transformation.
I doubt it was an oat flake, but it's something that looks like an oat flake. We keep working the eye washes, but the kids get squeamish when I try to clean out the hen's eye. LOL
Update...
Eye washes and Terramycin seem to be working.
There was something yellow that looked like an oat flake in the eye. It was pretty stuck and I wasn't able to get it out. But, we kept washing and doing the ointment.
Here she is today...
Still keeps the outer lids closed most of...
Today's update
I don't think the swelling has changed, but the eyeball is creepy looking. The yellow on the bottom of the cornea looks like it wants to peel off, but it's attached to the eye and I don't want to injure the eye. I can see her pupil now, and it is reactive, so maybe that's a good...
Day 2 update
I think the swelling has gone down. She has been opening and closing the eye lid on her own. The
cornea looks about the same. The head jerking has stopped. Her crop feels fine.
Fingers crossed. We are continuing with eye washes and Terramycin twice a day.
Thanks for the replies.
The yellow, I assume pus, doesn't come out. It's attached to the cornea. I just started the Terramycin eye ointment.
But, now she is doing a weird head jerk. The crop doesn't feel enlarged and she doesn't have bad breath. I suppose it could be impacted or sour crop? I'm...
I'm hoping this is just an infection that we can clear up, but thought I'd see what others thought.
Our 19 week old silver wyandotte suddenly has a swollen eye. No other changes in the coop, flock, food, etc. She is getting around fine, no coughing, rattling, wheezing, etc. I don't see any...
These "chicks" are now 17 1/2 weeks old. They were hatched from brown eggs and were fluffy yellow chicks. I believe we have 3 cockerels and one pullet. The boys just started crowing this past weekend, and waking up at 5am is getting old. No information on the breed as they were hatched in my...
Here are the chicks at 10 1/2 weeks old....
Tulip, the only one with the brown
Biscuit
Daffodil
Buttercup
Not the best pics, they were running because the kids were chasing them. LOL
I'm guessing I won't be getting a job as a chicken-sexer.
;)
Here they are at 5 weeks 3 days old...
They are looking more white in color, definite red ear lobes. Remember, they came from brown eggs. The breeder said they came from Rhode Island Reds, but I'm thinking perhaps he meant Rhode Island Whites? Or maybe White Rocks?
And I'm thinking I...
