I have 3 roosters that I would be willing to swap if anyone near here is looking. Would swap for Silkie, Cochin, or Brahma hen/pullet, or another hen that has proven to be pretty broody regardless of breed.
All hatched in January of this year, none are aggressive going after people, but are...
Brahmas should be fine with the bantams. They are definitely huge birds, but honestly they're the most gentle, laid back birds I've ever had. They tend to be low in the pecking order and generally don't cause issues.
Sorry ya'll...haven't been on the computer in awhile!
They all have pink feet-Australorps.
Sucks to hear about the black feather butchering issue...Don't have a plucker so it's going to all be done by hand anyways, but still. At least now I know...stay away from the black birds ;)
I'm having a heck of a time figuring out what my black chicks are. They're about 6 1/2 weeks...is there a quick way to tell the difference between the two (leg color, ect)? There's a couple that are a bit larger and have more of a green sheen and some white tips on their feathers...I'm thinking...
We have the "lip" you're talking about with the bedding-the way the 2x4's are screwed into the concrete with the OSB creates a good tight seal around the outside where losing bedding won't be a problem. The "shed" is actually an old hay storage barn, modified to a 2 car detached garage during...
Thank you so much for your INCREDIBLY well thought out and thorough response!
Yes, the weather is GROSS out here in the winter...right now it's 7 degrees outside and we have spots with 6ft snow drifts. Yuck. The sectioned off part is just to keep them secure at night, and they will have access...
We are in the process of converting a portion of a decent sized shed into a coop. The whole shed is about 25x25, but we have partitioned a space that is 7x20 specifically for the peepers.
The floor is concrete, so I'm not concerned about predators burying their way under. We used this gun type...
Agree-any breed CAN get along with chickens and other livestock if trained, but there are definitely breeds that would make it harder if they are very high prey drive.
My old Doberman was FANTASTIC with my chickens and son...our new one that just turned two has a much higher prey drive. She...
I've been looking into Quail a lot more recently...I do love the chickens and will always have them, but quail seem to be a lot more economical and love the idea of the fast turn around for homesteading.
We are about an hour south of Plainfield in Ford county...I'll be watching how your...
Shows how much I've payed attention ;) I lived in Naperville, then Elwood, now here in Ford/Livingston county and have never heard of Bobcat being a problem before.
Good info, thank you much!
Hey ya'll...
Is anyone in central IL? I'm in a tiny town between Kankakee and Pontiac-heard last week that there was a large Bobcat sighting/tracks in Fairbury. Was wondering if anyone's heard if they've found it?
Our babies arrived this morning!

Sadly, we had 2 DOA. Down to 28. One was an EE, the other was one of the mystery chicks. I don't blame Meyer for that-the weather has...
