Hatching eggs/slipping chicks with a broody hen

My hen ( a Cochin) just hatched 5 of her six eggs. Good percentage. This is the first time I have hatched eggs with a hen and I will never incubate again. I have them separated from the flock and they seem healthy and happy. My question is: I have fed the hen Chick Starter for the time she...

    Late Bloomer

Little Guy as I named him died this morning. I was prepared for it but still disappointed. Now I have another one with a swollen eye that looks covered in a film. I have them on shavings and I am wondering if that is causing the swollen eyes. The little guy that died had a protruding eye too.

    Late Bloomer

We had 4 eggs hatch out of incubation. Three are healthy robust chicks. The fourth one came two days after the other three chicks and he has had problems. His legs were very splayed and he couldn't stand. He is doing much better with a brace and can now walk to his feed and water. He has a...

    Help! Coyotes jumping fence

Yes, coyotes are very wily and it is mating season to boot. I am getting a high powered pellet gun. A coyote was up by our gate howling and crying this morning at 8am. Could have shot it fairly easily.

    Help! Coyotes jumping fence

We just lost seven hens 5 days ago. There was not a body left, only feathers. I heard a ruckus and ran down to the enclosure. A young coyote was in the pen and scrambling to kill #8. I ran him off and he jumped the 5" lodge pole and chain link fence like it wasn't there. Today I had it...

    Bare bottoms!

Hi I have had flocks of 10 to 15 chickens for 15 years. They roam in a fenced area of about 1/4 acre and live a happy life. I have a new flock of hens that are under a year old. They came all bushy and healthy and started laying 3 mos ago. Recently 5 of them have developed red, inflamed areas...
