    light in coop?

Mine don't like snow, but I still give them access. Once in a while they check it out and eat some snow.

Old hen acting sick. Do anything?

Thanks for the info. She died shortly ago. Maybe I'll necropsy her tomorrow. I guess it was too late. I like the down the throat in the dark method, Makes me laugh. Thanks,.

Old hen acting sick. Do anything?

I think it's dried urates. It's far too large to be eggs of any kind.

Old hen acting sick. Do anything?

I was able to get Wazine 17 from a local farm supply (wormer) so if she'll drink she's being treated now. She's in a tub in the house. Added it to the whole flock water supply as well. I looked at the vent again. Here's a photo: I do notice a white build-up at the base of lots of the feathers...

Old hen acting sick. Do anything?

Okay - so what's the best way to worm quick? I have no worming meds on hand, so what should I get? I do have Iverhart Max tablets for my dog here (ivermectin/pyrantel pamoate/praziquantel).

Old hen acting sick. Do anything?

I might add that my son suspects she has had loose stools/diarrhea recently, but in a 30 chicken flock I can't confirm that. Suspicion is based on poop stuck to feathers near the vent. I don't see it in my exam.

Old hen acting sick. Do anything?

Thanks for the idea. I googled and I see photos of it. I see nothing wrong with her vent unfortunately.

Old hen acting sick. Do anything?

I have an australrop that's about 6.5 years old. Normally she's our most active hen - jumping for treats and such. Found her laying on her side in a run this morning on the ground - not normal. We put her in the coop on some fresh bedding with a handful of BOSS in front of her. She ate a...

    light in coop?

Of course production went up. But hens have a finite number of eggs. You will get them faster over a shorter period with 24x7 light. If you plan to get rid of them when they stop laying, then that's fine, but they will lay over 5 years instead of 2 years if you don't force them with light...

lethargic rooster with bugs and discharge from beak

Anything I missed before: 1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) - Sizzle -seems to have his normal weight maybe 9 months old 3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? He wasn't in his usual location yesterday at...

lethargic rooster with bugs and discharge from beak

Let me add he has no respiratory issues - no wheezing. He does free-range although we have not let them out for a few days due to a visiting dog. We don't worm and he is just one of our flock of 32. We have a couple fenced acres where they free range that includes all kinds of terrain. He is...

lethargic rooster with bugs and discharge from beak

I have a rooster (a silkie/frizzle or sizzle if that matters) that is so lethargic he can't get up. My wife found him with his head propped up near a waterer. We brought him in and found he definitely has mites or some bug so we dusted him with Sevin just a few minutes ago. Now we notice when...

Any Other English Shepherd Owners Here?

We just got our English Shepherd puppy today. You can find breeders here: http://www.englishshepherd.org/ Our breeder already had our puppy hanging with their chickens. Our chickens don't think much of her yet since they are scared of dogs (one was killed by a neighbor's lab). I can't wait...

Where did my chicken go - pile of feathers?

I guess we will look for a body in the morning. This was a 7lb chicken and no holes under the fence, but a coon could be on our property still since it is densely wooded in that area. This is a high tension predator control fence, so unlikely it climbed it with a chicken body. Odd thing is...

Where did my chicken go - pile of feathers?

We discovered it at dusk, but it could have happened earlier since we were out. A barred owl has hung out near the spot of the attack in the past (in a maple tree and we had a bobcat looking into the yard just last week, although a neighbor tried to shoot it. Hawks and bald eagles are common...
