We emptied our coop last fall. Cleaned it out and sold our chickens. They were old and I wasn't going to feed them all winter. For the worst winter ever, glad I did. There was 3 ft of snow to the coop almost the entire winter and now it is surrounded by water (never happened before in our 4...
My chick answered the question for me. I came home from work tonight and the tape was pulled off and the chick is up standing a walking. I had a hard time figuring out which one it was.
So I posted on the 4th about having a chick that couldn't stand. I don't know if it was a true splayed leg, but that is how I ended up treating it. The chick will now stand and walk with its legs taped. But it still falls down and sits on its hunches most of the time. I worry if I take the...
It depends on the temp inside your coop, drafts and if they are feathered or not. It is too cold here for me to put unfeathered chicks in my coop even with a heat lamp. It just wouldn't be warm or draftless enough.
I have gotten chicks from TSC and Rural King before. This was when they were letting people touch the chicks. All the stores around me now don't let anyone touch the chicks except employees now. Even then, I only ended up with 2 roosters out of all the pullets I bought. Mistakes do happen...
How would I know? What do I look for?
I think it is only the right leg affected. That is the one that "turns out" or is weaker. The chick is doing better. It has figured out how to get out of my contraption is will stand when I come in the room. But it is usually sitting back on those...
I found where someone was putting their chicks in a shot glass to force them to stand and strengthen their legs. So I tried again with the tape on the legs and found something about the size of a shot glass. The chick seems to be improving. I will wait and see how it goes.
Thank you. I have tried taping the legs last night but I don't think I am doing it right. The chick is completely unable to stand then. I am doing "physical therapy" with it. That site is excellent. Thank you!
Bump. Trying not to lose this chick. Can't find any answers searching online. Was hoping someone would have seen this before or at least recognize what it might be. Thanks.
It will stand if I stand it up, but it doesn't seem to have the strength to get up on its own. Then it doesn't stay up long. It will push up while resting on those sores spots, but not get up to its feet. Any ideas of what happened and/or how to fix/help this chick?
I was going to order some to have them arrive this week. I pushed it out until mid April. I just don't want to take the chance with how cold it has been. This thread makes me glad I did.
Found one of my turkeys in the pool almost dead. He had agonal breathing and his flesh and beak were very pale. I pulled him from the water and dried him with a towel as best I could. I then blew dry most of his feathers with a blow dryer. I keep the blow dryer back far enough so I wouldn't...
