I've got 8 hens, 4 brown and 4 white commercial layers. They are about a year and 3 months old. Never had any health issues until today. One of the white hens is walking with her tail down, and very lethargic. she doesn't eat much, or drink much, but I have seen her peck at both halfheartedly...
As to the aquarium heaters getting left dry when the water levels go down. Most are meant to be fully immersed. Just stick it directly to the bottom of the water tank / bucket. If you ever have less than an inch of water left, you need to be refilling your waterer more often, or have a bigger...
I am using a 5 gallon bucket for my 8 hens, with 4 nipples in the bottom of the bucket. I plan on punching a hole in the lid and installing a 150W aquarium heater set to it's lowest setting. They're cheap ($15 at walmart), safe (designed to be submersed with aquatic livestock), and simple...
I've got 8 birds, 4 white and 4 brown commercial layers (leghorn based whites and red sex linked browns). The whites all sleep on the perches without fail, and the browns would all sleep in the nest boxes. I started shooing the browns from the nest boxes every evening when I'd go out to pull...
I got one for you. I have 4 white and 4 brown commercial laying crossbreed hens. They are around 19 weeks old and all 4 whites are laying 1 a day now. Only one brown is laying, and she's doing it fairly oddly.
She has a single, extra large (63g+) egg every two days, and it's always double...
at 18w4d, one of my browns just layed an "EXTRA LARGE" (65g) egg. It dwarfed all her sisters' eggs in the nest boxes that day. It was probably her 3rd or 4th egg ever. Not expecting that ever day.
Eggcellent. I have 4 white layers and 4 brown layers (commercial hens bought day old from a feed store). The brown ones seemed to grow up faster, but the white ones got huge combs really quickly. I had one brown one that would squat long before the others when you touched her back, and knew...
The former. Eggs you buy in the store can be a month old before they get to your frying pan. Eggs that come right out of a chicken will have that little stringy bit and the yolk will sit MUCH higher on a very thick egg white. These are signs of a quality egg, not that something is wrong.
So happy! My flock of 8 just laid their first intact egg. I had two days of broken eggs with thin, leathery shells earlier in the week, but today this little gem was waiting for me in the nest box. It was delicious.
side by side with a commercial, white, "large" egg.
I never realized how...
Got my first egg from on of my 4 brown commercial layers at 16w 6d. The shell was so thin that it ended up getting cracked before I found it. Paper thin. I wasn't expecting any eggs so early, so I had only JUST switched them to lay feed that week and hadn't put out any oyster shell yet. I fed...
Here's a couple of my girls. They're the generic commercial layers that the local feed store sells in the spring. No real idea what kind of breeds might be in em.
Here they are enjoying the day I thinned the turnip patch.
My girls love turnip greens. I have a vegetable garden that, at this point, is about 80% turnips, and the greens on the big turnips are easily a foot and a half long. I usually harvest one turnip a day to cut up into sticks or mash with supper or what have you, and tear the greens off for the...
As long as the water is liquid, the chickens should be fine with it. Its summer here in Canada, but when winter does roll around, especially in February, my 5 gallon waterer will freeze solid in an hour or so, easy. I intend on putting a little aquarium heater set for 5-10'C in the waterer to...
