To wash or not to wash eggs?

This is contrary to what I've been taught my whole life. Washing removes the protective bloom from the eggs. I can't say that I'd recommend this to anyone. There is never a situation where I wash my eggs

Question for Raleigh NC Chicken Folks

Be careful if they're fighting. My only Silkie roo, which is blue, killed my younger white Silkie (sex unknown). I put him on "death row" (in a coop by himself), but decided to keep him. He's been great ever since, and he mingles amongst the rest of my flock. I have some chicks in a brooder...

Question for Raleigh NC Chicken Folks

I'm in Raleigh too. You were hoping to have Silkie hens, right? Same thing happened to me, but I decided to keep my Silkie roo. Right now (literally) I'm in my back yard putting together a new coop, as I decided to start breeding Silkies and will be keeping them separate from the rest of my...

Breeding my Silkies among other breeds

Great! Good, clear information. I read a thread about "setting" by the full moon, but wasn't sure what that meant. So, from what you're saying, I'll continue to collect my eggs daily, separating the Silkie eggs from the rest and set them when I'm ready. I've got some time since my Silkie hens...

Breeding my Silkies among other breeds

I only want to breed Silkies, and didn't know if was a concern with it mating with the others. I'm a novice with a flock of nine chickens. I set out to raise them for eggs only, so I'm not versed on any breeding information. How long after a fertilized egg is laid do I have before the chicken...

Breeding my Silkies among other breeds

Buttercup, thank you for the reply. Your advice would be the obvious solution. Maybe I should've phrased my question differently. When people want to breed certain chickens among their flocks, do they try and keep the rooster from mating with the other hens, or do they do as you suggest?

Breeding my Silkies among other breeds

I recently found that one of my Silkie hens is a roo. I've considered breeding it with my other Silkie hens. I have three other breeds among my flock - all hens. My question is how can I ensure that my Silkie roo only fertilizes my Silkie hens? Thanks Sean Raleigh, NC

    Copperhead killed my Silkie

Yes, I forgot to mention that I bludgeoned that copperhead to death with a shovel. I'm hoping to find something that keeps me from having to kill them.

    Copperhead killed my Silkie

Yesterday evening, my daughter came running in the house shouting, "snake!". When I got to the coop, the Silkie was dead and a copperhead had her head in its mouth, attempting to eat her. I allow my chickens to free range while I'm home, so the door to the run was open. The silkie was about 12...

Question for Raleigh NC Chicken Folks

Indeed, there were. 717 Currituck had 15 in the yard and 10 in the brooder. The owner and I went down to Broadway, NC yesterday. He picked up 5 more for a total of 30! I picked up two white 12 week old Silkies (hopefully pullets). After the two Silver-Laced Wyandottes I bought on Sunday at the...

Question for Raleigh NC Chicken Folks

You'd be surprised at the number of people that say Raleigh residents are limited to 4 hens. I've actually seen it on websites. As it concerns specific statutes, the only things I've read are consistent with what you've told me. Thank you so much for clearing this up for me.
