    To wash or not to wash eggs?

    This is contrary to what I've been taught my whole life. Washing removes the protective bloom from the eggs. I can't say that I'd recommend this to anyone. There is never a situation where I wash my eggs

    Buttercup, thank you for the reply. Your advice would be the obvious solution. Maybe I should've phrased my question differently. When people want to breed certain chickens among their flocks, do they try and keep the rooster from mating with the other hens, or do they do as you suggest?

    Copperhead killed my Silkie

    Yes, I forgot to mention that I bludgeoned that copperhead to death with a shovel. I'm hoping to find something that keeps me from having to kill them.

  11. My new coop. I built this back in March of this year ('13) out of 1/2 inch oak plywood that I got for $22 per 4x8 sheet!! I painted it red, gold, and aqua for an island feel. It is enclosed in a 225 square foot area created by my master bedroom which juts out over the backyard. I framed in the areas between the support posts and covered it with hardware cloth. As you can see, the roof is also oak plywood. Since I have complete coverage from the elements, there was no need for any typical roofing. There are three nest boxes which is plenty for my nine chickens.

    You'd be surprised at the number of people that say Raleigh residents are limited to 4 hens. I've actually seen it on websites. As it concerns specific statutes, the only things I've read are consistent with what you've told me. Thank you so much for clearing this up for me.
