    Lame chick covered in maggots

Freedom Ranger pullet, 9 weeks old, planned for slaughter for the freezer in 3 weeks Three days ago I noticed she hadn’t moved from sitting in the doorway for the entire day. Other chicks were literally walking on her. I picked her up, and she could not stand. I put her in a wire dog crate (no...

    Bloody vent, lethargic, not drinking

Thank you everyone for trying to help me.

    Bloody vent, lethargic, not drinking

Her poop was the normal color, a little watery. No blood in it. Below her vent feels soft and squishy. Yes, she is tipped over in this picture. She just stays in whatever position I put her in, so I try to make sure she is actually upright. Once she fell over onto her right side when I...

    Bloody vent, lethargic, not drinking

She is still just lying there in the box, napping. I have force fed her a little bit of water a couple of times. I fear we may have found her too late. The kids keep telling me that she looks dead. Each time I check on her, she either opens her eyes, or barely shifts her head.

    Bloody vent, lethargic, not drinking

Thank you for the prompt reply. I didn't realize I had to refresh my tab to see the response. I do not feel an egg in her vent. When I lift her tail to take pictures, her vent spasms. It was a little tough holding her and taking pictures at the same time. My kids were too grossed out to be...

    Bloody vent, lethargic, not drinking

This morning when we opened the chickens one of our hens was sitting on the floor of the coop and my daughter said she looked like she is dying. I brought her in and feared she might be egg bound. I'm not confident in my assessment at all. I put her in a warm bath, but she just closes her...

    Rabbit cage as coop

It is starting to warm up here (no more negative degrees and only one more night in the teens that I see), and since I discovered one of my chickens stuck and with some injury to her head just behind her comb (bad scrape? It doesn't look pecked), I am thinking it might be time to just move the...

    Introducing two single hens

Thank you so much to everyone who helped me here. My two hens are now getting along quite nicely, at least during the day. I haven't tested them overnight in the same cage yet. I think I will continue putting the new one in her own cage if she isn't already there in the evening, and they can...

    Rabbit cage as coop

Hello, I am very new here and was just getting some advice in the flock management forum on how to introduce to single hens to each other. We have two chickens and recently lost one, so we replaced her so our first would not get depressed from being all alone. Anyway, we don't have the best...

    Introducing two single hens

Our coop is currently two rabbit cages with wooden boxes very much like nesting boxes attached to them. Once the snow is clear here, we plan to renovate an unused section of the garage into a better coop. We need to do some roof repair and rake out the driveway gravel first, and make it...

    Introducing two single hens

I didn't think I had snatched one away from the other. As I said, I waited until they had moved on to other things. Frosty had retreated into her cage and the younger one was pecking at the driveway. I didn't want to risk any problems while I wasn't there to supervise, and I didn't want the...

    Introducing two single hens

Thank you very much for your advice, cityfarmer12. I read this after I had spent an hour with both chickens outside closely supervised. The younger new chicken is very restless in the little rabbit cage and keeps having tantrums and kicking over her water bowl and tearing it apart (it is a...

    Introducing two single hens

Hi, I am new to the board, so I hope this is where this thread belongs. Last fall we took in two 6-year-old hens from our neighbors who had to move. They only had the two hens left from their original flock and these two were very good friends. Since we had never had chickens before, we put...
