    Nesting material

Great friends, leaves are good as agreed....will try to mow / shred them next time and store in dry place for the winter, why to waste them in trash bags when could be used for hens

    Nesting material

Has anyone tried using dried leaves in the coop / nesting box instead of wood shavings, sawdust or straw / hay? Pls let me know if it makes sense Is it safe to assume that since some leaves are more acidic than others (e.g. oak) hence they prevent mite build up??

Blood spot on egg? how to take care of that?

Thank you friends for the answers. She just started laying eggs a month ago and it was the first time I saw it. It did not happen today so I guess she was having trouble pushing the egg out. Hens must feel like giving birth, I guess, or may be not, cause egg laying happens almost every day

Need help with coop construction before snow hits - Silver Spring MD

Thanks Res. Actually that is plan B. I have covered the coop with tarps for the time being and it keeps the coop free of wind and rain. You are right that collecting eggs is kind of pain. There is not enough space for all of them to lay inside so they have found places outside. But egg hunting...

Is she a mix of Mapuche / South American hen

I guess that is the term. This hen does not have a vaulted head so may be she took it from the Andalusian side

Is she a mix of Mapuche / South American hen

Donrae, that is great information to help know the diff between crest and tuft. One more question. There are hens, which do not have feathers on their head but still have the pointy bony head. What do we call that head bump?
