    Curious?

I've seen 2 day old chicks out scavaging with mother hen in 50-60 degree weather. Why do we "baby" human raised chicks for a month in 90 degrees red light brooders?

    Mean Rooster or Sick Hen?

She's about a year and not acting funny in any way, shape, or form, except for being "kicked out of the flock" (by herself at times) by the rooster.

    Mean Rooster or Sick Hen?

I have a Rooster, who is normally a gentleman. Shows the girls where to get food, and is okay for the most part. But here's the thing, he's being very agressive to my favorite hen, to the point of ripping out and injuring her wing feathers. When I feed them in the morning, he chases her away...

    "Lockdown"?

    "Lockdown"?

This is my first attempt at incubating eggs. All of the literature says to "lockdown" the incubator for the last 3 days to retain proper humidity levels. So, they're due to hatch on Monday night. So, my question is, do the last 3 days include hatch day, or is it 3 days prior to hatch day? Should...

    Which Eggs?

I would just save all your eggs. Keep them in a clean carton at room temp, but not below 55 degrees. Keep one end of the carton about 2 inches higher than the other, and turn it every 6 hours or so. Eggs will keep for 7-10 days... I wouldn't go past 8 personally. Happy incubating! Also...

    First time Candling...

Yeah, I don't trust any of my thermometers, I have 5 in there... then I average them to keep it as close to 99.5˚ as possible.

    First time Candling...

My eggs are a rainbow. I have blue, green, dark brown, and light brown (more a cream I suppose).. So, tonight I candled, and EUREKA! 100% fertilized, 100% showing growth with clear veins! Thank you all so much for the support. It's terrifying, yet thrilling to me (incubating eggs), and...

    First time Candling...

Hello, This is my first time candling eggs. It's day 3, and I can only see a dark spot about the size of a yolk on all of my eggs. I don't see any veins or arterial growth yet. Is this normal? All the websites I look at say I should be seeing veins today? Thanks for any help, -Seth
