Sorry meant to update. A week in isolation with good feed and supplements and she perked up nicely. She is in the big coop now with everyone else. She is smaller than the rest of the batch but hopefully will catch up eventually.
I have a 4 week chick, supposedly a pullet, but of unknown breed. She was an add on the Feed store gave my son when 2 of the chicks in his order died in shipment.
She its markedly smaller than the rest of the clutch and is always getting stepped on. The past 2 days she outs holding her head...
Maybe we could have prevented everyone from getting it by keeping quarantine of the sick ones, but we decided that they would fight it together and survive or all be culled.
Also, despite us being very careful with the rooster he came down with it 4 days after the fox attack. I had him on Tylan...
I think, maybe, the one group, the older hens, were carriers of it. They came from various places over last year. The other coop were all from My Pet Chicken in January. The 2 groups shared a run though, so while they slept separate they weren't isolated from each other. But I think the...
We have had a stressful 2 weeks.
It started with a bad storm that knocked down a tree branch destroying one of our 2 coops. Thankfully no chickens were injured, but very freaked out. We put all 21 (mixed ages and 1 rooster) into the other coop. Much too crowded but needed while we built a new...
He definitely takes care of them! It snowed about 10 inches here last night so he is outside shoveling the coop. He gets up At dawn to open the coop And feed them, cleans it weekly and so on. If he isn't home to do the chores It's his job to find someone else to do them.
We went on vacation in...
That is what he asked for, 2 cream legbars, 2 Cuckoo Marans and 2 speckled Sussex.
He likes his mixed flock of birds and collecting colorful baskets of eggs
He is very excited that in 2 weeks he is getting 2 more cream legbar female chicks and 1 male. He plans to build the five their own coop...
I have 10 chickens currently. 3-15 week ISA Browns that I don't expect to be laying yet, 3- 2 year old hens and 4-1 year old hens. 3 weeks ago the 1 and 2 year olds were all laying either daily or every other day. I was averaging 5 eggs a day from 7 hens. Very respectable in January. Then...
The surviving 8 are doing fine now. I reduced the heat lamp, still keeping it on as its a damp chilly even in the house today. Been feeding them egg yolks and yogurt this morning.
We had a dozen 4 weeks olds in a dog crate on the covered porch. They had a heat lamp on them with a tarp over it at night. It has been warm here. last night a storm front blew in, earlier then was forecasted and the temp dropped 40 degrees. The tarp blew off and the outdoor rated heat lamp...
I think we have a plan.
A friend of mine that raises poultry for meat is going to take the CornishXs this weekend. She will grow them and slaughter them at the right time and give me 2 of the 6 birds for our consumption, keeping the other 4 for theirs.
We are going to build an A frame coop...
So if I process the CornishX before we go out of town , do you think I can introduce the new littles to my layers and convince them to live in harmony before winter sets in? Is 4 x8 a big enough coop for 13 chickens? There are 4 roosting bars, only 2 of which are being used right now by the...
