I have a hen bleeding profusely at the neck!

My daughter who is out there all the time also thinks the other hens have pecked her. I'll create a separate pen for her tomorrow and watch and see what happens. She's still eating and drinking but it's a nasty mess under her feathers.

I have a hen bleeding profusely at the neck!

At first I wasn't sure if the hen was diseased or suffered an injury. Now I know for sure she had an injsury of some kind. i know I need to separate her for sure. Under the feathers all around the neck she is bleeding profusely. I cannot find a vet in my area to treat her, although I'm still...

Help with Injured or Sick Chicken!

I found my hen like this today. At first I just noticed the missing feathers on the top of her head and thought she was molting. Then I looked more closely and saw there was a puncture or small cut. There has been a roster coming to our flock so I thought perhaps it was him. But the top of her...

Do I Need a Coop or Are Nesting Boxes Enough?

You all are amazing and have given me such great information. Thanks. I think I'll definitely enclose the partially enclosed area I have for them now so that they are at least completely safe at night. As for this broodiness issue, I guess I need to be sure to not have too many rooster and just...

Do I Need a Coop or Are Nesting Boxes Enough?

Hi. I'm in Fallbrook. My 8 girls, now turned brood of 24, are secured with a 6 ft fence topped with chicken wire. I've never had any problems and I like the feel of a free-range yard for them. I'm just completely new to the idea of having they lay, a rooster, a real coop, etc.

Do I Need a Coop or Are Nesting Boxes Enough?

OK. So, do I need to put a roof or something over the nesting boxes?

Do I Need a Coop or Are Nesting Boxes Enough?

No. The top is open. I didn't know about Hawks. Big chickens? Thank you! Yes, they have perches.....I did read up on that and added them in for their little feet!

Do I Need a Coop or Are Nesting Boxes Enough?

Thanks everyone for being so nice while I figure this out. I've got barred rocks, silkies, easter eggers, turkens, rhode island reds and white leghorns. 22 Hens and 2 Roosters of which 8 Hens are laying and the rest are babies now.

Do I Need a Coop or Are Nesting Boxes Enough?

The yard is enclosed with a 6 ft fence to which I added chicken wire above that. Then they have an additional sheltered area at night (just for the elements) they go into, but you're right, other animals can get in there. Here, my main concern would be coyotes, but they can't get over the fence...

Do I Need a Coop or Are Nesting Boxes Enough?

OOHHHH. Hahaha! So, let me get this straight....Now with the rooster, will I notice that a hen will stay on her eggs instead of leaving them and then I'll just leave her on them? I could even add other eggs underneath her, right?

Do I Need a Coop or Are Nesting Boxes Enough?

Well, I actually am going to have roosters for the first time and am looking forward to my hens becoming broody. I'm just wondering if I need to do anything more with my nesting boxes to make them comfortable, like add a coop or a roof overhead, or, if the nesting boxes in the yard themselves...

Do I Need a Coop or Are Nesting Boxes Enough?

Thanks. They are totally free range and outside all day. I've never had a rooster and, thus, a broody hen. Will she lay in a simple nesting box for 21 days if it's not inside a coop? Or, do I need to put the nesting boxes inside a coop if I want to allow the hens to start, what's the right...
