    Broody Hen Thread!

Update: One of our broodies mysteriously left the nest at day 18 so our other broody took over. We had 7 of 9 eggs hatch, one quit and one was cracked (probably stepped on). The chicks are adorable and Millie is a great broody mama!

    Broody Hen Thread!

We candled the eggs on our broody sisters again last night. This time I dug up my Brinsea candler and we used that instead of a flashlight (big improvement!) We also moved all the eggs at once, candled as quickly as possible, then returned them. One girl had five and the other had four, so...

Air cells were good (I'm pretty sure :)). The shells are dark brown on some of the eggs, some are white or blue or just light brown, and were easier to see. We candled with a military flashlight but we are newbies and trying to manage both hens while candling. We rechecked the four we had...

We're new to hatching so we looked at the post here with the series of eggs candled day by day. We candled Friday night and took out three, two clears and a blood ring. Nine left, all looked good, although a few are really dark and hard to get a good look at. We left those in. So we'll see :fl

Yes, they purr/cluck softly and puff up when I lift the top of the nesting box. They have been sitting dedicated for about three weeks. If one goes off to eat/bathe/poop, or if we lift one off their nest to check the eggs, the other hurries up and starts scooping up the eggs. (This made...

I'm a little worried if they will co-parent as sweetly as they have shard this clutch. Is that the plan B you are talking about?

Hello! I have a small backyard flock of four hens. Two of which are co-brooding a clutch of eggs! From day one they have kept themselves snuggled side by side. So I let them be. I am interested to learn if others have experienced this and have posted over on the broodies thread as well...

    Broody Hen Thread!

I had two hens go broody at the same time right next to each other at the end of our community nesting box. No rooster so I placed twelve fertile eggs under them 11 days ago. They've been sitting side by side, sharing the eggs the whole time. We separated the coop with hardware mesh and...
