For those of you using shears...you just cut off the head with the shears? Do you put them in a killing cone first? I use the hatchet method and I really hate doing it that way.
Pics of our Delawares. The first is Bob, our rooster. It's the only rooster we got our of our first Delaware hatch from eggs we got on ebay. Behind him is one of our polish hens. We have 3 we keep in with the Delawares. It's easy to tell the eggs apart!
This is the new hatch at one week...
I think it happened on Saturday when the sow took her babies on a walk of the fence line. The pasture has three wires of electric fence. The sow used her snout to root up a little dirt along the whole length of the fence and the babies followed her. This is her first litter on pasture. The...
This is a pig tail with a sunburn. It doesn't seem to bother them now. And they are staying under their shade better today. They also have it on their backs and ears but not as bad as the tail.
The vet says it is sunburn! He said it's common in pasture raised pigs and that it will go away. I didn't know sunburn on pigs would turn black like that. I'll try to post a picture of it today in case anyone else runs into this. He said there isn't much that can be done if the sow won't keep...
Thanks Rebel, I can try that but all of our local feed stores are closed. The only thing we have left is basically a Tractor Supply. Those guys aren't usually real helpful. I'm going to call our extension agent next. Could be a while before the vet is available.
I'm currently waiting for our vet to call me back. Our sow had her second litter of pigs on the 2nd of this month. Sunday, I noticed little black lines on one of the pigs tails. I thought it just got it's tail in the mud and didn't think much of it.
This morning...most of the babies have the...
racoons and possums will also attack in the daytime if they are hungry enough or if they are sick. We had a racoon that did that last year. We saw him come out behind the coop. We caught him in the trap quickly. I sure hope you catch the killer!
We have a new dog that we got as a puppy. He's about 6 months old now and he won't stop stealing eggs. Our chickens are free range and so is the dog...well, he was! He goes right in the chicken coop and steals the eggs out of the nesting boxes. I gather eggs several times a day but he always...
I'm looking to expand my flock of Delewares. I'd be interested in hatching eggs, chicks or pullets. I would like to not have to have them shipped so Central or Northern WV or the Mid Ohio Valley area would be best.
