    Feeding new chicks

Thanks for the comments about the good luck you have had with Ideal and also about the success you had with forced feeding. That is basically where I am now, so maybe I will have some success with the others.

    Feeding new chicks

RE: chick starter Unfortunately I don't have any dry chick starter food on hand. I can go buy some on Monday and hope that the remaining chicks will eat that. The protein gel is supposed to work as chick starter food. I tried dipping their little beaks in the gel food, as suggeted on this...

    Feeding new chicks

Update: half of my new chicks are dead now. I will try to save the rest. The problem is that I don't think they are strong enough now to give them chick starter. I will stick with the watered down gel food and feed them with an eye dropper. Has anyone else gotten sick chicks from Ideal, or...

    Feeding new chicks

I got my chicks from Ideal and they were a few days old when they arrived. They don't seem interested in either food or water. They are weakening faster and faster and I am afraid that they will all be dead soon. I am suspecting that they must have been ill when I got them. I never heard of...

    Feeding new chicks

I may be overreacting, because my daughter came out of the womb starved and wanting to eat. I got new chicks last Thursday and I mixed up the green protien gel stuff. The chicks are not eating it. I have been giving them baby electrolyte and water with a dropper. I tried to get them to take...

How long are chicks carrying salmonella bacteria???

I am trying to find out how long new chicks carry the salmonella bacteria. I am getting an order in a day or two and I have a 1 year old. I would like to know how long to quarantine the chicks from the 1 year old. Has anyone seen a date for how long they carry the bacteria before it dies...

HELP! Vote for your favorite BYC Coop Page!

Hi, I have a suggestion for next year....How about BYC choose the finalists and list members can vote on the coop they like best? I took a look at how long this list is and had to decide I won't have time to look at everyone's. If the best coop is at the end of the list, it probably won't win...

Mystery illness affecting one of my chickens. Hasn't left nest in 1 wk

The consensus in 'Chicken Behaviors and Egglaying' seems to be that this is a broody chicken and that she is not sick at all. Thanks!

Chicken hasn't left nest for 1 week +. What is wrong???

That is DEFINITELY good to know. I would have let her sit forever waiting for her "illness" to pass. It sounds like this calls for some "tough love." I will give her the boot tomorrow morning and lock her out of the coop and run. THANKS!

Chicken hasn't left nest for 1 week +. What is wrong???

Broody? Would that stop her from eating and getting up? I am not breeding, so I can try a couple of plastic easter eggs. She is very friendly when I visit her and touch her. She does puff up her neck feathers. Any suggestions on how I can differentiate between a chicken that is sick and a...

Mystery illness affecting one of my chickens. Hasn't left nest in 1 wk

I had a healthy and active chicken. One day she was sitting in her box all day. I thought she was egg bound. She had her egg and was still sitting in her box. I never see her leave. I left her water in the box and as far as I know that is all she has had for a week. Her eyes and comb look...

egg delivery -- how do I help?

Thanks for the idea of a water bath. I would not have thought of that. It is night now, so I will probably wait until tomorrow. How long is "normal" for a chicken to lay a difficult egg? What are the signs of distress where I need to start thinking "this is an emergency?" I feel bad for...

egg delivery -- how do I help?

My chicken has been roosting for 3 days. I checked her this morning and I could see an egg "crowning." I gave her some water and ended up disturbing her so much that she got up, walked around and ate, so I knew she wasn't too bad off. How long can a chicken try to lay an egg before it gets...
