I have several white leghorns. They are a smaller chicken that is an egg producing machine. Hens weigh about 4 1/2 lbs give or take so it's not really a dual purpose breed. They can handle the cold but it does slow down their egg laying quite a bit. They can handle the heat better than many...
In my opinion they do pretty good for meat. I would wait until they start slowing down in egg production around 3-4 years old. They are a good dual purpose breed. The hens usually weigh in at 6+ pounds.
Welcome and i hear ya on that one. I was born and raised in the North side of Houston up until i was 19. I wouldn't go back if someone paid me. I've done got to used to the country life here in Erath county between Abilene and Ft. Worth. I live outside city limits but i only have about 1/3rd of...
Cool on the breeds and yeah mine have slacked off majorly with the weather. They are a bit more flighty and not as friendly as normal so i'm sure the weather has stressed them out. It's pretty normal this time of year. As long as she is healthy i'm sure she will get back to normal. Calcium wise...
Got 6 Barred Rocks and raised them since chicks. They are good egg layers that have large brown eggs. Very friendly and over all nice birds always following me around. Sometimes they remind me of small dogs in the since they follow me around. It's a really good, beautiful breed to add into the...
I have 4 RIR's and all are good layers. They follow me around all the time. They seem to do very good whether it be winter or summer. Decent sized chicken so they are dual purpose. Good egg layers of brown large eggs. They stay pretty calm. They are very curious and pretty good at foraging. In...
Right on and yeah it probably is. I've had this happen before when the temp/light changes from fall to winter time. It was around 27 this early morning. I figure they are just getting used to the difference in temps and lack of light. Once they get used to it i have no doubt that they will go...
What breeds? Just curious because if they have been laying for a couple of months now they started rather early. Normally you don't even put them on laying pellets until they are 18 weeks of age. If they are 27-29 weeks that seems a little early if they have been laying for a couple of months...
My RIR's and BR's are about 9 months and i'm having more or less the same problem. With the weather 80 degrees one day and 30 the next it tends to happen at least here in Texas. I've noticed in years past that chickens do this when the weather goes haywire from fall to winter. So i blame it on...
When they first start laying it's not very consistent. They might not even start spitting them out on a regular basis until spring due to it getting colder. If your having big weather changes that will also affect them until they find their groove so to speak. Getting 3 one day then 1 the next...
Mine have more or less done the same. My leghorns have stopped completely. I think it's due to the weather changes. Once it stabilizes out better instead of 80 one day and 30 degrees the next they should kick in gear again. I live in Texas where the weather goes up and down this time of year...
I started out with white leghorns a few years ago. Since then i've also added a few other breeds. Been around chickens most of my life really. Leghorns tend to slack off in the winter time (for me anyways). They are egg laying machines! I haven't had one go broody either. As they age the eggs...
