When did your earliest hen lay?

Our Black Star started laying at 15 weeks. She has only missed 2 days since she started laying June.

Thank you for the reply! I would think so too with the comb, but I literally second guess myself on everything. 🙄 We got a surprise different breed than we were told "she" would be cockerel, and now I'm just SURE everything is a male (even my Black Star and Blue Sexlink). 😆

I've looked and looked at pictures. I've read about "double barring" and "lighter are males, darker are females". I don't have another BR to compare her to, so now I'm second guessing myself.. I thought I knew Perl here was a female, but as I look at her in pictures, she looks "light" to me for...

    10 week old Easter Egger

❤️ I am at total peace when I'm with the chickens. If I would've known chickens were all I needed I would've done this 30 years ago. I wish we were allowed roosters here. Sure beats the dogs, cars, and radios blaring. Satisfying is a great word.

The "clucking" is just once in awhile. It's a new sound since only about 3 days (I was worried it was a crow, tho it sounded nothing like a crow). Maybe she's just learning her grown up voice. 😊 I don't know when they start losing the chick cheep.

I'm a 1st time chicken owner, and am unsure if I am hearing the start of "clucking" or what may become a crow. Is 10 weeks the time they start to clucking? I had 1 chicken that I KNEW was crowing at 9 weeks, there was no doubt. Here is the chick in question. Is s/he a pullet or cockerel do you...

Black Australorp or Jersey Giant pullet or cockerel

Thank you so much for this information! It's super appreciated. I just peeked and the feet underneath are also yellow. With your lead on the yellow feet, I did some more reading and searching - I also read that oftentimes the BJGs have 6 points on the comb vs 5 on BAs. Interesting stuff! We...
