So how to test, if they have dun or not (or some similar black diluting gene)?
But isn't dun a heterozygous form of the dun-gene and in homotzygous form the colour is khaki? The breeder says they breed true, so maybe it's not dun afterall... What about choc?
I think I'll have to try to get a...
Buff - I looked at some buff pics and could these be just some sort of buffs? Chicken calculator at kippenjungle.nl says buffs are wheaten, red, dilute and dun! But the calculator gives the same image with only wheaten and dun. Well, it gives the same image with partrige and dun also, so I don't...
Ok!
But what gene makes the pattern brown? I mean, wheatens do have black pigment, don't they? I don't see how it would explain brown lacing.
And I'd be very interested if they have some brown or dun gene. It would make possible to develope solid browns with extended black exc. I haven't seen...
The underfluff is white. Had to go and check
And the lacing is actually more like multiple, only on saddle it's double. And the color is definitely brown, I'll try to get some close up pics tomorrow when there's hopefully more light (we have a terrible stormy weather!).
I think they are gorgeous too, the only problem is I only have two hens! I need to know their genetics to deside how to breed them. I'll try to incubate some of their eggs hoping to get the breeder's rooster's genes, but for the future I need to think something else. These birds have been inbred...
Sorry, no pics of chicks. The two chikens I have at home are full grown. I try to get eggs from them while the previous rooster still has some influence and maybe get chicks of the same color, but it takes time at least the 21 days
I have two new chickens and I don't know what color they are..? They are really golden yellow and have double lacing on their tails, clear neck. Pattern is not black but brown in color, there's no black - or blue - in them at all (althoug one looks quite blue in the photo).
Here's few picks...
Can the mottling gene show if heterozygous? I have two hens that are mottled, one had a lot of white in her first feathers and the other has developed tiny white dots only now at year old. Is the latter heterozygous?
Thanks a lot! Just the type of information I was looking for
What makes the roo's brest so light? Shouldn't it be darker with those genes?
The white chicken, I noticed she has few grey feathers in her tail. One actually shows in the photo. Could she be a golden based splash birchen..? The...
Well, as I'm living in Finland, there's no one to DQ my birds, as we don't have shows or standards. I don't know if I have any use for ABA standard either?
What I'd like to know is what is the genetic makeup of these birds. Just to know how to breed them to get some nice an maybe new (in...
Hi all,
I have a mixed lot of pantam cochins and some mixes that I don't know what color they are. I hope you can help me?
This is a new roo I got, I don't know anything of his parentage
This one is sister
to this one
Same as last one (on the background) with a similar but more yellow...
Hi all!
I joined this list to learn more about chicken color genetics. I'm breeding bantam cochins and some other breeds, but we don't have any poultry shows in Finland and generally knowledge of chicken colors is very poor.
I have a mixed flock of cochins and some mixes and I hope to get some...
