Yeah, the second pic shows some pretty long, pointy saddle feathers, and you can see them in the first pic after you notice them in the second. I vote rooster!
The“big” birds all already roost on the back roost in the silkie coop (there is are two ), and though the Silkies aren’t directly under them, I do worry about that. I will try setting the Silkies on the front roost.
I think what I like about Meyer Hatchery is that they have a chart telling you what your extra chick was depending on the week you got it. I can’t take the suspense! :lau
I’ve only got 15, but I plan to get some meat chickens soon, and next spring I’m bringing home some turkeys!!! (Which I figure is close enough to count.) 😂.
reading that over, I say “only 15” then remember the days when I thought 5 was a lot...
I know that size of coop is important. My 15 chickens free range all day, and they have two coops for night time—one small one that was built for the five Silkies (3.5x4 ft with a 4x5 enclosed, predator proof run underneath that they can enter anytime) and one 8x8 coop with no run (but they are...
Ugh, I totally rewrote the title to this post three times, and I still don’t think it explains what I want to ask. Searching for it was useless since I can’t figure out what the actual words would be, so I’ll just jump in and explain my question!
In the future I’d like to breed my Silkies, but...
Too far away, but good luck! I second giving Craigslist a try. Make it clear they are getting really close to laying age—a lot of chicken newbies want to give raising them a go but are nervous about getting day old chicks and messing it up with babies. I know that was a big fear of mine...
Not a worry so much as a curiosity... but do any of y’all have chickens that move in “cliques”? All my chickens are within a year old of each other but were raised in three different batches. Two of those batches live together (the full size chickens) while the other batch (the Silkies) are in...
from my experience, Silkies May start laying as young as 5.5 months or as old as 9 months, but are more likely to lay anywhere between 6.5 and 7.5 months old! (They have some weird “egg timers” going on inside them, LOL 😝)
I think I can extend the ramp more without losing head room—the entry from the floor into the coop is wide.
Right now my chickens prefer to sleep in the run. They have very little interest in the coop. I think I will just add a nestbox to the run (It’s very secure—the coop is already open to...
My parents have come to stay with me in the country since the whole COVID thing started, and yesterday my mom walks up, looking worried, saying she thinks one of my chickens has been rolling in charcoal from the bbq. I am not sure what the heck she’s talking about since there is no charcoal...
They all look like pullets to me, as well. The comb and wattles are small, like a hen. Of course, a roo could always be a very late bloomer, I guess, but at over four months, I’d say they’re pullets.
Hi Carly! I am a newbie to chickens, having gotten my first five Silkies four months ago (all pet quality, no show birds), but I hope to breed Silkies in the future! It’s my goal long term. :)
