Don't worry. I'd actually wait maybe a month before letting them have a playdate. I don't blame you being nervous. I was too when I first got my chickens. But not to worry, chickens fight for a reason, to gain dominance. Good luck. You got it from here.
Hello. Good idea you have there. I wouldn't go for 4 months, however I would keep a watch on how big they grow. I suggest after 2 months let them interact with the other birds. I hate to say, but they will fight: there's really no preventative for that unless you want to keep them locked away...
Hello! I'm a little worried too. It's good that you got rid of the ball of poop, but it's not good that he isn't appearing to be doing well. Let me just let you know for the future: be careful of where you get your chicks, especially from a "friend of a friend". Just my experience. Now onto the...
Good point. I had one of my chickens have severe broodiness, and it caused her some problems (to say the least). It doesn't help that your hen is molting either. Just watch out for her. :thumbsup
Hmm. I've never hatched eggs before, but at my 4-H club, we have. I believe that is correct, but I don't know why they aren't hatching. Have you candled all of them? Sometimes it's just one bad egg that won't hatch.
Well, it's natural for hens to stop producing, especially during the fall/winter. It's mainly because they are renewing themselves for breeding in the spring. Sometimes, if the hens are old enough, they won't molt at all or they will just lose some feathers. That's normal too.
Good luck!
Hello. Welcome to the forums. You're doing everything right! Chickens go through a natural molt in fall to get newer feathers for the winter. As long as she's eating, drinking, and (when you let her run around) moving/running, then she's fine.
Take care!
With my experience with roosters, his behavior is caused by the breeding season. He is trying to protect his hens, which is natural for any rooster. If you can get a hold of him, I agree with the rest: try and hold him down until he relaxes or (which I've found to work because it shows him who's...
Well, you're not alone. I raised a few cockerels some years ago, and they loved to fight. The best answer I can give you is that they fight because they want to find the pecking order. If you plan on having roosters, I highly suggest you start thinking about getting rid of one, because it will...
Hello,
I agree with the rest. I have had several flocks of chickens over the years, and my Polish hen makes that noise. She only makes it when the other two chickens in my backyard come up to her. I suspect its most likely a happy sound. Either way, she is really pretty!
I raise chickens for...
