I just googled partridge silkie and found almost identical pictures of chicks. Thank you! I was hoping for blue egglayers when i got them thinking they were americaunas, but i just read through the breed description and silkies sound great too! I'm excited to see them grow, they look beautiful.
I got them from my local hardware store. They had about five different breeds all together in a tub. The employees didn't know what they were or even what had been ordered. One employee guessed they were Americaunas, but I don't think so with the feathered legs.
Last week I noticed one of my girls limping. The limping has gotten progressively worse to the point she won't put any weight at all on it now. Today I noticed this bump on her leg that looks to be infected. Any ideas on what it might be or what i can do for her?
Oh my gosh, I'll lose my mind if they fly!! I took the drawers apart and they don'the seem to be anywhere else. There is a good 6" between the top of the substrate and the top of the drawer...I can't believe they can reach the top by piling up because I don't have that many beetles yet, like...
I started a mealworm farm for the chickens a couple months ago. I'm using the three drawer method in a plastic tupperware type drawer unit. The bottom of the beetle drawer is in tact, i am not using the self sorthing method that requires the bottom of the drawer be removed and replaced with...
Just wanted to update...it was the height of the bars. Raised them up and it worked like a charm. I wouldn't think 3" would be enough to make a chicken want to sleep outside in -10 temps, but I was wrong. Silly girls. Thank you!
No changes to the bedding other than more of it and no other changes in the coop. I think im going to try raising the roosting bars today because the height is the only thing that appears different with the extra bedding in the bottom. The bar they're picking outside is quite a bit higher than...
Yes, the boycott started the day I added the shavings. I've changed out the shavings before, but I definitely added more than normal this time to give them some extra insulation. The extra couple inches of shavings on the bottom left their roosting bars lower than normal, but they can still get...
My first thought was something in the coop too so I checked it and the girls pretty throughly today and nothing was apparent. It's secured from the outside with no signs of a 'break in' and the ground is frozen so nothing is digging into the pen at night. I'll go double check for mites but I...
I have 7 hens, 3 months old. The past three nights, I've gone out to close up the coop and some of the girls are roosting in the pen outside. The first two nights, it was two but tonight a third joined them. I'm in central Wisconsin and we're in the single digits now so I'm crawling into the pen...
