One of my hens eyes is messed up

Thank you for the link to the article, I’m doing my reading now. I’ve had one other young bird present with the classic neurologic symptoms many years ago and dispatched it early, but because of that I’ve been fully aware that any of my birds are carriers.

One of my hens eyes is messed up

I’m almost certain she was not vaccinated for Marek’s. I adopted this hen about two years ago from somebody moving. I actually thought I was somewhat educated about the disease, but I did not realize it could present in the eyes.

One of my hens eyes is messed up

I’m curious if anybody has ever seen something like this? My RIR hens eye changed and no longer has the pupil. It looks like the iris just shrunk in on itself. There were no injuries to the eye, nor any weeping or discharge. The other eye is normal and I can tell she can’t see out of the one...

4 week old from Meyer Rare Breed Assortment

Yeah, I thought the chicks of WJG chicks would be a little grayish, but I saw Hoover hatchery had a picture posted of one that was pretty white. I’m really interested what it turns out to be, I can’t think of anything else that would be white with the slate colored legs.

4 week old from Meyer Rare Breed Assortment

If I had to make a guess as to a breed maybe White Jersey Giant? But I don’t personally know the breed and technically it’s not on the possibility list, although Black Jersey is on there twice.

What are the happiest ending options for my Roos? Long and rambling post.

I know this is unrelated to your rooster issue, but where did you acquire pavlovskayas and how do you like the breed?

    What breed is this rooster?

TheOddOneOut was correct, he’s some kind of EE/mutt. All 3 of his offspring lay pretty greenish blue eggs and 2 of them were out of a RIR hen. All three of them have white earlobes as well.

    What breed is this rooster?

I adopted a small flock, 4 hens, a roo, and 3 of their offspring, from somebody who just did not have time for them anymore. Two hens are Rhode Island Red, the other two I was told Ameraucana, but I think Easter Eggers. I was also told the roo was Marans, but not so sure…. The fun part is the...

A great article in the NY Times today!

Please do post pictures of your bin with locking lid! I’m currently searching for a way to compost somewhat large amounts of food waste, combined with chicken poop, in a small space and create as little smell or flies as possible!

Old hens that no longer lay

It sounds like everyone has their personal preferences when it comes to chicken ownership. If you can't bear to kill a sweet old hen, let her live; if you can afford to keep several non-layers, why not? I have space limitations and have to cull a few every year, and occasionally nature does...

    Do you use supplemental lighting?

I have put my yes vote on this, with a caveat... Lights only come on after I have given the hens time to finish their fall molt. They have their natural break in laying to put energy into new down coats, but by mid-winter it's time to start earning your keep again. I also don't start too...

What do you feed your chickens?

I love all the input here, very fun to read. I have to say my birds do not seem to care for strawberries - like not at all. I can't figure that one out. Do they learn from each other their treat preferences? Also, raw carrot is mildly picked at, but shredded or cooked they seem to like. And...

    3-week old chick bully

Is this possibly because the chicks that were raised together stick together? So the mille fleurs that were brought up together don't really know what they themselves look like, they just know "these are my friends so I'm sticking with them!"?

    3-week old chick bully

Sheesh, why didn't I think of that? Thank you so much! 'Think outside the box,' right?

    3-week old chick bully

Ugh, I know it sounds like I'm being a bad chicken owner, but the only available covered run the chicks would be safe in is currently being used to break broodies. I once left a group of chicks - just a bit older than these - in a fenced garden plot, went in the house for all of a half hour...
