my bantams have just started hatching chicks. This is the second clutch, last clutch all but two died, most were found dead a day or two after and another died in the egg and one died from being too weak.
I had mulitple broody hens at that time so I figured that was the issue.

Two of the three eggs were found in the nest box cracked. My rooster favors the silkies and the silkies are sisters, so I think its our younger bantams who are too young to lay eggs. Very sad about it
Yesterday, we found out one of the two silkie hens laid three eggs in the nest-box. Today I found her already setting on them. I feel so proud, haha. I know a lot of chickens just lay eggs wherever at first, but she knew exactly what to do!

I would say both have advantages and disadvantages. It is hard to decide. Chickens are pretty easy to take care of but require space and money for a nice coop and such.
