One of my hens had gone broody, so I finally let her set on several eggs, which hatched a couple of weeks ago. I had separated her from the rest of the flock by blocking off the nest box she was using, so she was still right there in the coop. With the addition of the little ones, I moved her...
Thanks for that link Eggcessive!! That is exactly what her foot looked like. She's doing really well though. I let out for a few minutes on Tuesday, and what a difference! She walked around the coop as if nothing was wrong. I'll keep her separated for now, until everything is healed over. Then...
One of my Marans has lost her right foot, and I'm sure the left will be soon to follow. We had a severe cold snap here (temps to -35F) and she was the only one of my chickens who were effected. I feel bad for her, but she's eating and drinking well. The day I discovered that her foot fell off, I...
Glad to have found this post, as one of my Marans has lost her right foot, and I'm sure the left will be soon to follow. We had a severe cold snap here (temps to -35F) and she was the only one of my chickens who were effected. I feel bad for her, but she's eating and drinking well. The day I...
I've got quite a motley bunch!
1 Australorp/Maran cross rooster
1 Australorp hen
1 Astralorp/Maran cross hen
1 Rhode Island Red hen
3 Silver-laced Wyandotte hens
2 Aracauna hens
2 Golden-laced Wyandotte hens
3 Red Star hens
2 Maran hens
Total of my gang: 16
New running total: 7936 (or 7962 with...
My Aracauna was just over 8 weeks old when "she" started crowing. I had just bought 6 new pullet chicks to add to the flock, and this particular chick was the more aggressive from day 1. Now my big rooster, Cogburn, has figured this little guy out and keeps a keen eye on him.
My gang hasn't needed feed for a couple of months now! They wander our 10 acres and have been feasting on grasshoppers and other juicy bugs, as well as the zucchini they discovered in the garden (I really do need to fence that off!). A couple of the girls are molting right now, but my "Lucky"...
Sorry I didn't get back to everyone on this. I put the new chicks in and kept an eye on things...and they've all been together ever since!! There is a considerable size difference, of course, but no pecking on or bullying of the little ones. One happy family!
My free-rangers do the same thing. You'd be amazed at the places they'll find to stash those eggs! Behind plywood sheets, under work benches, behind bricks, even under old weeds along a fence row. Keeps life interesting to say the least. What has worked well for me is to just let them find those...
I have a 2-week old chick that has been in the house under a heat lamp since it was 2 days old. Yesterday one of my broodies had a brand new chick under her and another working on getting out of the shell. The 2nd chick didn't make it and I'm wanting to bring the first into the house. What...
The egg I thought had been chilled to death actually hatched...after I put 6 more eggs under my broody Wyandotte! I don't have an incubator. Will she continue to set those eggs even with a baby fuzzy running around? Any suggestions?
I don't have an incubator! This whole thing started out when Miss Broody kept setting, and I left her with 4 eggs. Only the one developed...until the day I messed up and it got cold. I stuck more eggs under her, and 6 under her sister who had joined her in the "Broody Fest"! I guess I'll...
Despite the fact that I came home to a cold egg last Wednesday, I came home today to find a very-much-alive chick had hatched out of the egg that I stuck back under my broody! I was going to remove the egg today and candle the others I put under her last Thursday and opened the coop door to the...
:ya:ya:ya:ya:ya:clap:clap:clap:ya:ya:ya WOOHOOOO!! I came home from work tonight and was planning on removing the egg that got cold last week, and candle the others. I opened the coop door and thought I heard something. I DID!! The peeping of a very-much-alive chick! I'm totally stoked...
