Sounds like a great idea to me! Practical, friendly, easy, and when you hand them grubs, they'll realize a little sand isn't going to bother you in the lettuce! Seriously though, want to move into my neighborhood? You seem like the type of person I like to have coffee with!
Check your local ponds in spring - autumn, but if you want to get started sooner or don't have access, I saw some for sale on Amazon and gardenpool.org sells it too. Good Luck!
The eternal dilemma... I've been looking at this lately. What I've been told or read...
1. Keep it moving; flowing water freezes slower. (solar pumps can be gotten for under $20)
2. Dark rubber bowls don't freeze as quickly.
3. Paint bricks / rocks / soapstone black and set waterer on top of it...
If I remember correctly waxworks have only slightly less protein than mealworms, but I don't use them for a different reason. One of the favored places for the eggs to be laid is in beehives. Since I also have bees, I just don't want to chance it! Can really harm a hive if even a couple escaped...
There are endless things you can do! They love mirrors, swings, bells, anything shiny or crinkly, etc...Be careful not to use anything they can peck apart and choke on (small bells, mirror paints, etc.) I also enjoyed using creative foods as toys. Wrap some treats or seed in a squash blossom...
Wish I could claim credit... saw it on Craigslist when I googled BSF for info...I mentioned I was looking at building a composter for them, and another friend with chickens said she'd buy any off my hands I had extra. She didn't want to touch them! Good luck!
I've heard they freeze well. You could probably also sell them on Craigslist or to local pet store. In theory you could eat them, but...! Better to have too many than not enough, right?
Hmmm... I've done small amounts of sprouts for treats but recently ran onto info for grazing frames and was wondering if anyone had tried these. It would be almost zero maintenance for me. Basically, it's fodder grown in trays or on the ground with a framed screen on top so the chickens only get...
Brilliant! I wonder if you've ever stuffed them before freezing? Would probably be best to steam veggies first and that would take away the easy factor. Never mind! So simple to just put it in with the bird, and to think I've been doing this in two steps when one would work! Thanks for the idea!
Thanks! I'll try and get some decent pics. Maybe I've been handling her too much trying to get her used to me. Have golf balls in there, 1 in one nest, 2 in the other. They sleep on them or occasionally kick them out. Have put one of their eggs in there for a few days too, but I was afraid to do...
So I'm new to chickens, lots of other birds, but chickens only the last seven months...I have 5 Black Stars who have been laying about the past 2 months. We switched to a larger coop / run 2 months ago and the pecking order switched with #2 and #1 switching places. My #1 hen has been becoming...
