My Australorp Maude has all of the pros mentioned and none of the cons. It's a great breed. It's so nice to have one chicken out of my four that I can reliably let Children pet and hold.
Ida is really loving being with the goats, and on her own decided to leave the 'birthing room' set up for her, and she roosts in with the goats. My husband gives her a hand full of the donkey's food each night when he feeds, and he says she 'sings to him' the whole time. After she got over at...
Oh yes! I have a coop that has hardware cloth that goes one foot in the ground, and a metal roof. They go out into my fenced vegetable garden during the day, and then I give them a treat and shut them up at night.
Thanks for your correspondance. My light is inside the hen house, set to come on early, so as to extend the morning and set to go off around eight. But, the silly things wont roost inside, so the light is doing them no good. It's not a big issue with me, however, I only have four hens. I do...
Should I worry about their not getting inside their house when it gets cold? I know they are pretty hardy, but they have an inside roost. You would think they would use it if it gets in the mid 20's.
Yes, not unlike our goat barn where 8 pygmies, a donkey and newly, added Australorpe named Ida has recently joined the group. She has claimed the rarely used birthing room but likes the goats quarters as well. Ida was starting to be mistreated by the other four in the coop, so she has really...
My coop is composed of 4 walls and a roof. The walls are hard wear cloth. Inside the coop is a A-frame house that is three feet off the ground. The house is @ 3 x 6' x3' at the peek. There's a ladder that goes from the bottom of the coop into the bottom of the A-frame house. Inside that...
If you put a light in the coop, where is the best place to put it. My husband put the light in the 'house' which is in the coop... so to speak. I'm thinking it should have been put in the coop. The food and water are in the coop/run area. Some one mentioned putting the light 'over the food...
Just want to mention what I did with the chicken that was being abused. We have a nice goat barn with an unused 'birthing room.' It is now Ida's quarters. We made the door smaller so the goats and donkey could not get in and kept her up for about four days. Now she comes and goes on her own...
Ah, I will try this. The light was on the inside of the hen house though. I call the Coop, the outer area that includes the run. It is completely under cover. The house has a ladder they climb every day to get to their nest box where they go every day.
In side the house is a roost as well...
My coop has two roosts out side the hen house and one insde. You would think the girls would want to roost inside now that we are having 27 degree nights, but they are still roosting on the roosts out side the hen house but inside the coop.
My husband wants to take down the roosts outside...
OK, so I will just have to do some watching. I think its one of the Australorpes. I think the one that's attacking is one of my two Ameracaunas. Hope this works. Not sure where I can keep her...
