Very different, actually. Winter, you'll see spates of negative temperatures. Around Helena, you can expect to see temperatures dip as low as -40F with serious wind in some parts. Rogers Pass which is near Helena has the all-time lowest recorded temperature in the lower 48 of -70F...

Can I put quail chicks of two different ages together?

They're coturnix. Thanks for the info. I may just put the youngest ones in a separate brooder.

    Quail Hatch Rates

Thanks. I've got 7 chicks now. Still, 7 of 12 seems not great. The incubator usually has great hatch rates if the eggs are good (up to 100%). I'm setting the temperature at 99.5F -- it's a Brinsea Mini with forced air and automatic turner. .

    Quail Hatch Rates

I figured you all could tell me what a good hatch rate for coturnix quail is. My first group hatched 7 of 12. This group looks like 6 of 12. My own birds are laying the eggs, so I'm putting in fresh eggs each time. I have 1 male with 3 females and 2 males with 4 females.

Can I put quail chicks of two different ages together?

I have a quick question. Long story short I have 6 quail chicks that have hatched. I have 2 quail chicks that hatched about 19 days ago. Would it be a problem to put them together?

Home Feeding Ideas and Solutions Discussion Thread

Alas, I live in the mountains where we grow rocks. It's really tough to grow much where I'm at and my attempt at growing corn was pathetic when the heat and dry season hit. I get organic vegetable and fruit scraps (large boxes -- anywhere from 1 to 5 boxes at a time!) and buy cheap expired...

    Increase in feed prices

Feed frustrates me because it is so expensive now. I've ended up looking into feeding them other foods. I've found a source for free boxes of organic fruit and vegetable scraps as well as a source for cheap expired bread. I mix those two plus feed Stock and Stable 14 and layer pellets. I...

The mean rooster gets the ax. And do you thin down your flock before winter?

My problem is which roos to cull. I have too many, and I need to consider it. Pistol, my oldest roo, is a fave, but I'm honestly not sure if he is hitting the mark, so to speak. He also has a very overhanging beak, but it doesn't seem to bother his eating. Piper and Squawk are better roos...

I haven't cooked him yet. He was tough dressing him out -- I'm freezing him for a while and then probably using him in a stew.

Best way to give up some of your hens?

I'd give up 4 Silkies and then buy more chicks. Your daughter will be thrilled with the new editions.

NEED HELP WITH POSSIBLE BULLYING--LOST TWO PULLETS SO FAR

Run space is subjective, IMO. If the birds are allowed at least 4 square feet per bird with enough space to get away from the other chickens, there shouldn't be an issue. The problems I've seen have to do with aggressive breeds and docile breeds. I've occasionally had too many chickens for...

Hey Gang! Whatcha think of my plans and Rooster issue?

Hahahaha! My husband found a mouse in the garage and hit it with the only thing he had--a .22. He showed me where the bullet bounced off a steel plate.

    rooster owning laws

I would tell you to go to the BYC Learning Center and click on the LAWS tab. That should have the ordinance for Highland's Ranch, but it doesn't. Is Highland's Ranch in Centennial now? (Used to be Arapahoe County when I lived there). There's like a gazillion covenants and home owner laws...
