New chicks - one likes to sit down a lot

I just got my new batch of chicks on Thursday. One of them, a white leghorn, tends to want to sit down a lot. She can pop right up, she walks fine, eats and drinks, etc., but when the rest of them are running around or scratching, she just sits down. Is this cause for concern, or do I just...

2 Day Old Chick With Crusty / Swollen Eye

I've been applying saline and the eye will open up a little (looks gray and slimey on the eyeball) and then it closes up again later. Do I need to use something else? Try tea again?

2 Day Old Chick With Crusty / Swollen Eye

She now has a more noticeable swelled sort of bubble on the bottom eyelid. Maybe she got pecked? I'm not sure at this point if I should try to do something or just let her be and hope it corrects itself. Like I said, she seems to be doing fine otherwise. Thanks for any advice!

2 Day Old Chick With Crusty / Swollen Eye

I just got 6 chicks today from a local fleet store and one (a gold-laced wyandotte) has an eye that's swollen and crusty. It was totally shut. After reading lots of threads on here, I tried putting a little tea on it. That seems to have helped and it's open a slit now. It looks kinda gray...

Electric fencing for horses - safe for chickens?

I've done some searching on this and I've seen mentions of electric fencing for chickens, but I'm wondering if the fencing I've set up for my horses is safe for my chickens. I used tape up top and 17 ga wire, the lowest strand at about 22". I have two chargers - a Fi-Shock 15acre, and a Zareba...

    Prolapse - What to do?

I didn't get a chance to check on her last night due to sick kids, but my wife and I looked this morning and we were happy to see clean fluffy feathers back there. We looked closer and saw no prolapse. I'm keeping her in the dark for another day and then I think we'll put her back out and let...

    Prolapse - What to do?

GRAPHIC PICTURE AHEAD! Here's a picture of what I'm dealing with. As you can see it's not sticking out very far. It stuck out twice that far at first, but now it's not as bad. There's one hardened glob of poop on there (right in the middle) that just doesn't want to come off.

    Prolapse - What to do?

I checked on her yesterday about noon and it had prolapsed again. We did the same procedure - bath and then preparation h, though this time we actually did push it back in. When I took the towel off of her to put her back in the cage, she struggled a bit and it popped back out. We pushed it...

    Prolapse - What to do?

One more thing - what about protecting her against infection? Like I said there was a little blood, and we weren't able to get rid of every bit of poop.

    Prolapse - What to do?

Update: Last night I left her in the garage by herself. This morning I went out and found the garage door open. It doesn't always latch properly and it was really windy last night, so it blew open. I found her outside walking around our barn, with ice on her butt! I brought her back in and...

    Prolapse - What to do?

Thanks everyone! She doesn't seem to have any other symptoms except for some discoloration on the tip of her comb which I think is just from some frostbite, and not disease. I'm thinking/hoping it's just because she lays giant eggs and is maybe a little short on calcium. I did just realize...

    Prolapse - What to do?

Quote: Thanks for the advice. I'm NOT second-guessing you, but the reasons given in the non-prep H posts is that hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels and prep H helps with that, whereas this is a protruding organ and not swollen vessels. But enough people do recommend prep H that I think...

    Prolapse - What to do?

I just went and checked on her and found another small solid poop - about 1.5" long and 1/4" in diameter. The feathers on her rear end (which are caked with poop) are moving in such a way that it looks like she's trying to push, though it may have just been her normal breathing. I hope I'm...

    Prolapse - What to do?

I have an approx 3 year old red star (one who lays very large eggs) with prolapse. I noticed her butt was really poopy, and when I looked closely, I saw what looks almost exactly like the pictures here, in terms of color and size...
