    Raccoons...they just keep on coming!

So, I had trapped 6 raccoons between October 3 and the 20th. Nothing since then, until yesterday. I had another one. Hopefully I’m not going to start over!

    Raccoons...they just keep on coming!

So I spotted a raccoon outside my run, after my girls had gone into the coop. My actual coop is fort knox, and im working on making the run the same. Found a trap on fb and picked it up the next day. Baited the thing with a piece of cheese. Danged if I didn't catch the bugger that same night! I...

Feather issue in month old chick

Well I was gone for the weekend and now 4 days later, this little one has still not grown any feathers! If anything, she has lost more. When I picked her up to check her over, she is hot! None of the others feels like this. I can see where the feathers are growing in places, and it still...

Feather issue in month old chick

The feed is Naturwise 18% protein, non medicated, starter grower. She seems to be getting her share of time at the feeder as well as waterer. They haven't had much for treats yet, just a handful of prepackaged mealworms every couple of days. I just started adding some chick grit about 3 days...

Feather issue in month old chick

I've had my flock of 12 for a month now, so they are 5 weeks old. There is one Australorp that is not growing feathers on her back or wings. She doesn't appear to be getting picked on by the others. When I am in the coop, she acts like the others, seems to be eating and drinking normally. In...

Converting a Squirrel shed into a coop

Here's my dozen little cuties that showed up way before I was ready for them! I'm in hustle mode now! I can't believe how quickly they have grown in just 10 days! They are currently in a big bin in the house and rapidly outgrowing it!

Converting a Squirrel shed into a coop

I decided to add insulation because of our Minnesota winters. I think with adding a barn fan and opening up the eaves along both sides, with screens, it shouldn't get to hot in the summer, and retain enough warmth in our brutal winter!

Converting a Squirrel shed into a coop

After gutting it, I have a pretty much bare slate to work with. I rewired everything and put the outlets at light switch height. They will get safety/dustproof covers. The ceiling fan will be removed as well. The windows will eventually be covered with hardware cloth, but for now they are such...

Converting a Squirrel shed into a coop

We were able to lower the structure to about 8 inches above ground, and finally get it leveled out.

Converting a Squirrel shed into a coop

So, here's what we started with. This is actually about 5 feet off the ground. Minnesota winters are not for the faint of heart!

Converting a Squirrel shed into a coop

I am converting what used to be a kids treehouse into a chicken coop. In between the treehouse past and the chicken coop future, the building had been invaded by squirrels and used by them for years. Current renovations included lowering it from tree house status to about a foot off the...

What do you do with all those eggs?

We have a freeze Dryer. Any extra anything goes into the machine and gets stored in mylar for long or short term storage. We have done both raw and scrambled. FD raw beaten eggs turns into a powder, that easily reconstitutes back into the real thing. Nobody I have fed them to has a clue that...

    Coop options

Yes, it really is that high! And yes, we really did have that much snow this year! I normally have to duck to get under it, but can almost stand up between the joists. On the left side in that picture, behind the trees, is the remains of the attached 10x10 deck that was taken out by a tornado...

    Coop options

We are wanting to take the plunge into chicken raising and are still in the planning and research phase. We have a small out-building on our property that we are hoping to use for our flock. It is about 8x10 and sitting about 5 feet off the ground and was used as a kids tree house by the...
