This is the weirdest thing I've ever seen. First the background. I had a flock of 14 hens (no roosters). On March 18 I picked up five Isa Brown pullets from Family Farm and Home. They were supposed to be point of lay but hadn't started laying. Early this week I got a couple of small "beginner"...
The one thing I didn't like about having chickens was having to go at least once a day to get rid of ice and give them water every day in winter. I had been using the open heated pet bowls to solve that, and it worked, but did get dirty and still needed frequent filling. Got this one this year...
I think it looks fine but I'd like to suggest you use a 'poop board' under the roosts. I have 15 hens and it takes me less than one minute a day to scrape off the poo in the morning. In winter I line it with newspaper and it can go a few days if necessary (no flies or smell when poo freezes). I...
I think these are roly poly bugs. Also called pill bugs or potato bugs. My guess is that they are harmless. They're not actually bugs, but crustaceans. I've heard chickens won't eat them. (or at least not with any enthusiasm). But we all know you can't predict what your chicken will eat.Of...
Right now I have three Buff Orpingtons, two white rocks, two barred rocks, one brahma and three isa browns. I will be adding three black jersey giant one year olds very soon. I love having a mixed flock, and have a real soft spot for the isas. They're smallish (compared to my other birds)...
I have ten chickens, 1 Brahma, 3 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Barred Rocks, 2 Isa Browns, 2 White Rocks...I just went to check for eggs (Thrilled that we are still getting two or three eggs a day this late in the season) and found a white egg! All these girls have been laying brown eggs for over a year...
Well, we found them a new home. A nice farm and wildlife rescue not too far away. Just dropped them off and they're learning their place. We'll miss them but so glad they found a place.
