Introducing 2 chicks to 3 hens

Be patient. They can be real evil to the newbies. Had a couple pecked to death - ugly. Wait till they are almost the same size. Good luck.

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Hey there OT's - couple of questions.... Okay, one is about rooster behavior. (Although I'm sure you get tired of stupid rooster questions) I have 7 girls, free range all day. Have had 2 roosters since we got them spring of '11. One was crazy rough, one was mean. Tried going without one...

I've been working on the hard boiled egg thing for awhile. So far my best trick is poking a little hole in the big end of the egg. (I use a paperclip end). Boil water, add a couple pinches of baking soda, boil 17 min (I'm in Durango, works at my altitude), then ice bath. Usually works pretty...

What a great idea with the papasan chair! Last night when I got home from work my 10 week old turkey tom was super lethargic. Head droopy, walking really slow, not eating. Of course I got right on BYC. Seeing as it was too late for the feed store, I started dosing with cayenne. Made a...

3 Barred Rock, 2 Speckled Sussex, 1 Black Mix Breed, 1 RIR mix, newbies are easter egger mixes (it's not them - too new). The only one looking good is the Black Mix - who really never hangs around the others at all.

Checked for lice & mites, layer feed is always available, fermented feed in morning & evening. Not using much scratch, just a little in the fermented and whole oats. Got to be feather picking - since I see no feathers. Just can't figure out who!?

    New to turkeys with questions

This is my first year with the turkeys too. Not sure about the fattening up, but our BR was fanning out and puffing up at about 7 weeks. Super cute!!

Hey OT's! I'd like to first thank you all for answering all us newbie questions. Your advice is invaluable. I've got flock issues - could use some feedback. Sorry for the long story. We got our first pullets last spring. Coop is 40 sq ft, run is 140 sq ft. Got 8 birds. (two batches...

    Tail feathers vs. dog

That's what I figured. Thanks for the reply.

    Free Ranging Dilemma

I do the Scarecrow sprinkler too. They hate the noise and the water. Used it all last summer, haven't put it out at all yet this year - I think the chickens just believe that it is still there.

    Tail feathers vs. dog

Hey all - Just a quick question. We had a friend bring a dog over this weekend - "It would never hurt one of your birds." Yeah, right. Went right after our 9 week old hen - luckily she is very fast. But lost some tail feathers in the process. Her bottom was a little red - I put some stuff...

Hey Minchi - I use Ranchway feed. I really like it. Mostly using the Turkey Grower right now for everyone, but usually do the 20% lay feed. Their scratch is really nice too, very clean compared to the local mill. Love that it's from FoCo. Not a lot of help - buy my 2 cents. :)

Looking for some good info on roosters. We had one who was too rough on the ladies (7 of 'em), barebacked a couple so he went in the crock pot. Went without for a few months and the girls seemed fussy (bunch of girls together without men - you know how it gets). Got another rooster. This...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Just got back from the feed store with my whole oats that were on sale. THEN I read the posts that the birds aren't crazy about them. Oh well - they'll eat them eventually. :)
