    Hemp Bedding?

I have been keeping chickens for 6 years and I used to use sand for bedding. I have a 4' x 6' coop for about 10 birds. I don't scoop poop daily, don't have poop boards, and would only clean the sand about 1 time a month. It was very manageable. I did let the litter build up pretty deep in the...

    large lump

In case anyone checks, I just wanted to follow up on this post from 2 years ago. This is my hen, "Hawk," an Easter Egger. She has continued to live a busy and productive life and this problem she had, when she was about 10 months old, doesn't seem to have hurt her overall quality of life...

    Rooster turned mean...

Funny! I am just reading this thread (on July 24) & at first I didn't see it was from several weeks ago. I commented, "You won't regret it" to one of your earlier posts. I had to get rid of a rooster ("Spank") earlier this summer. He had been like a pet since we got him a year ago, but I hated...

    Rooster turned mean...

I personally wouldn't wait until he "gets me good" to give him the boot.... chicken/rooster bites and scratches can get very painfully infected and endanger your health. Do it now. I promise you will NOT regret it.

ALL my hens are eating eggs. ARRGH!

Well, folks... the verdict is in on mustard eggs.... my girls absolutely gobble them up.

So, what kind of soap did you use? Sounds like it worked really well, but I wonder if it was bad for the chicken??

ALL my hens are eating eggs. ARRGH!

. Hi. I feed them a commercial feed (both crumble and pellet), and I mix in a little bit of oyster shell and baked, crumbled eggshells that I've saved. I think they started eating eggs out of boredom, and now do it because of the tasty reward they get for pecking into the shells. My question...

ALL my hens are eating eggs. ARRGH!

Hi! Thanks for the quick responses! I got two of the broken eggshells from this morning and re-filled them with mustard. While I watched, two girls came over and pecked at them, then walked away. I'll leave them there all day & see what happens. I'll also make sure there are 'mustard eggs' in...

ALL my hens are eating eggs. ARRGH!

So, it has been a very long, cold winter here in central Ohio (many, many nights below zero, and still expecting more this week). The weather has to break sometime. But meanwhile, there have been times the chickens have been stuck inside the coop for long periods of time. ("Stuck" by their own...

    Large Lump Under Chicken's Backside

I'll try to remember to update here later, to let you know what happens with her.

    Large Lump Under Chicken's Backside

Eggcessive, thank you so much for posting those links. I didn't know what to search for to find a thread about it. I read through many posts and now at least I have some understanding of what it could be... but it seems it could be due to one of several causes. I will probably get a syringe...

    Large Lump Under Chicken's Backside

Hi everyone, I could use some help. I have an Easter Egger who is less than a year old, and has developed a large lump that protrudes from the underside of her body just beneath the vent. I looked on the forums and found one other one called "Large Lump" where someone had the same problem...

Here's a picture. Not the best, but it was hard to get one that showed the problem. It is larger than it looks in this photo.

Hi. I was wondering if you could let me know how your chicken is doing now. I have one that is suffering from the same problem, which I just discovered yesterday, but I think she may have been developing the lump for some time. Mine is an easter egger. I will take a picture of her this...
