I got my first polish chickens a month or 2 ago, and they are so friendly! Does that poof really impair their vision? I feel like a bad mom for not considering that before :( Seems like it would, but... The one with the biggest poof will run clear across the yard (~300 feet) when he (she?)...
ok, just one little question- i don't quite get the thumbs up thing-- i tried to give thumbs up, as i would on Facebook, but it wants a comment and add to reputation? i wasn't sure what to do...
Thanks everyone. We don't have any of the originals, the last one passed last winter. I'm glad we were there to rescue them, i just love having chickens and can't even imagine not having them.
Hi,
Hi there. My name is Nancy, but you can call me SMITHNAN, lol, bet you can't guess my last name! It took a while for me to join BYC because whenever I had a question, I would just search on it, and SOMEONE had been through it before. Eventually I joined and now 4 years later, I guess...
In case someone checks some day, here is what happened. I "chickened out" in our game of "Chicken" and moved Pink and her 2 babies to another coop before the babies hatched so there would be no disputes. They are hatching today, i think- one was dead on the floor, not sure what happened, it...
Pink hatched 2 little chicks about 3 weeks ago. Our unnamed black astrolorp (ba?) Started sitting on some eggs on the floor of the coop 2 weeks ago.
I went to check on them one night and pink and her two little babies were sitting on the eggs while BA was sitting nearby, just watching! And so...
Well if the heat is a little on the low side, it takes a little longer to hatch anyway, and 22 days is not really late for hatch. I would just be sure not to open it again and give it a couple more days.
Maybe the temp was on the high side, I set on a Friday morning, and at least 2 (lavender ameracaunas) are starting to pip now, Wednesday evening. So excited!
Thanks, my husband reminded me of some duck eggs we tried to incubate, and i recall that smell very vividly. I thought hubby was going to barf. Our batch is fine, and i've been directed not to read scary stories about exploding eggs just before bed time. He says i'm just smelling stale water...
How strong is the smell before it explodes? I locked down yesterday, It just smelled a little "off", I couldn't remember if I'd smelled that odor on the 2 hatches I've done in previous years. After reading these stories, I'm really developing a phobia!
Well just to follow up. The neighbors hen is tame, but was a first time mama. She didn't seem too traumatized when we took the eggs, but she would not return to sit, she never did go back. :(
Oh well I guess you live and learn, right?
I should have asked - CAN i remove some of the eggs?
My neighbor and I had been saving hatching eggs. We originally planned to have our own broody hens sit on them (so they can raise them later), but mine wasn’t cooperating. On Friday, my neighbor put all 14 eggs under her broody hen because...
