My 22+ week old pullet was, as the title suggests, sneezing and had a bubbly eye in the left inner corner. She actually woke me up this morning because I could hear her "sneezes". They didn't really sound like normal sneezes, but a bit of a small cluck and cough and sneeze all mixed together...
I have actually given them grit at the same time as Oyster Shells and they eat that like candy too. Their pen is just dirt and pea gravel, so when I don't have grit out for them, they often peck among the pea gravel for small rocks as grit.
I think I'll wait until I see eggs before giving them...
I have three backyard hens all just around 4 months old. None of them are laying yet but I want to make sure that they have enough calcium for when they do. They are currently on regular layer feed pellets for food.
A couple of times I have put out a small tray of oyster shells for them that...
@QueenMisha Thank you, that is very informative! If I ever gain more chickens in the future and decide to go to shows, I will definitely keep this in mind. :)
Oh. Interesting. When I traded him the lady didn't think he was pure and let me hold another Silkie Roo she had. Granted my Silkie was young, but the other Silkie she had was softer and didn't have any "straw-like feathers" like my rooster did. She said she was thinking about using him in shows...
Whether or not my Cochin is purebred doesn't really matter. She's just a backyard hen whom I love regardless. I thought it would be interesting to know what you guys think!
I learned a couple weeks ago that my Silkie Roo (who I traded for some mutt young hens because I couldn't keep a rooster)...
@McChics Seems like she really wanted some iron in her diet!
But on a more serious note, I hope she recovers well. It's actually a good thing you saw her gobble that screw up, because you wouldn't of seen how much other metal was inside of her without taking her to the vet's!
So I traded my White Silkie Roo for some small hens. The woman I traded with didn't know what exact breeds they were, just that they were 'mutts'.
They are pretty small, about 1/3 to 1/2 the size of my 4mo Cochin, and are apparently a week younger than her, too. They are pretty identical, but...
Update: So I ended up trading my Silkie for two small mutt hens. I miss him awfully much, but I'm hoping that the three I have now will get together and I'm sure the woman who I gave him to will treat him right. c:
@realsis you were right, I heard my first crow today and I'm kinda freaking out because it was so easy to wish that it would end up a pullet. If you check my recent posts, I made a new topic if you have any advice on how to silenece crows?
Haha I just realised my Cochin is shaking her head or somethings so it looks like she doesn't have one! Here's a better picture of her, a bit unrelated but more settling.
I also forgot to mention these two are just over a week shy of being 4 months old.
Rhyme intended
Anyhow, it turns out my Silkie chicken that I took a chance hoping would end up a pullet... Did not get the memo.
Today, at 7:20am, I heard my first crow from my Silkie. :(
Long story short, I have two chickens (Cochin hen and now confirmed Silkie roo) and they're not too...
