    some feed stores will pre order but atleast in my area, this is usually in spring & all chicks are already delivered. i've used mcmurray hatchery [chicks will arrive in the mail] with success, but they do have a minimum. i got my meat birds in mid may & they will be ready for butcher at 8 - 10...

    i got 9 from 16 ... but I'm dealing with a coop problem [see my previous post - argh!], so normal for egg production to be low.

    I know .. it's a long one [post] First, a little history ... I have both layers & guinea hens. They have been raised together since birth [May 2010]. Last fall, some of my 17 layers [mix of barred rocks, nh reds, etc] had missing feathers from their backs and not just a few ... about a 6"...

    I have the same problem I first noticed it last August when they were about 4 months old. I added a rooster in November, so I cannot blame him. I did have a mite issue in January, but have treated all of them, dusted the coop with DE at every cleaning & provided a peat moss & DE dust bath...
