    Don't eat silkies

When I saw the pictures and films about how horrible condition is the Chicken farm or factories, I cried for days. I try my best to keep my chickens happy and healthy. Hopefully they can live as long as they want; even when they are old and not laying any eggs, I would just keep them as pets and...

I am a chicken lover too. I raise chickens mainly for their poo...chicken manure is the best compost for the garden, and I have a big garden that needs a lot of manure, but we don't need many eggs, and never even dream of eating their meat...sometimes I have to feed eggs back to the chickens. I...

Serama chickens are tougher in winter than I thought.

Before I got Serama, I read everything I could get from the internet. Some people said, they cannot tolerate under 40, some said, under 32F. But my Serama roosters with fully grown feathers still active at 22 degree, and not afraid of the 5 degree temperature inside the chicken run.

Dear Lisa, Because their sizes are very tiny, and originally from Hot climate Malaysia. I guess they can adapt the cold weather pretty well.

Serama chickens are tougher in winter than I thought.

When I hatched 4 little Seramas, I was prepared to give them heating lamp when the temperature below 32F. But last night I forgot to turn on the heat lamp, and it was 16 degree this morning at 7:30am. I opened the mini coop I built for them, they are alive and well. Last week, the night...

    Chickens quit laying

I have 24 hens around 18 months old. Most of them are moulting, only the white leghorns are still loyally laying eggs. The eggs decreased since November, and we only got 2~4 eggs each day in December, got 0 egg once. I guess this is normal in the winter unless we give them artificial lights, but...

    Hey! New here at BYC.

Since they are roosters and so tiny, I cannot free range them with my other chickens. They are all hens, bantam, Polish and other regular size hen. They are very happy to play in our backyard. Those Serama roosters would have to stay in a potable pen instead of free range. Check out my video of...

    Hey! New here at BYC.

If almost all the neighbors have roosters, then nobody would complain their noise. One of our Serama chicks started to practice his crowing when he was 5 weeks old. Very funny!

    Hey! New here at BYC.

Hi FarmGal, thank you for your reply. It's nice to have as many animals as you want. Looks like you have a homestead in the rural area. I love remote countryside, but because my husband's work, we need to live in an area with good transportation. I think we cannot have regular size roosters...

5 Week Old Black Copper Marans Pullet/Cockerel?

I guess it's a pullet's. My Coockoo Maran grows fast and became big and fat, so I guess your pullet's comb is normal.
