    chickens and rain--TOTAL NOOB QUESTION

With the almost weekly thunder storms rolling through the NE in recent weeks, I've noticed that they stay out of the hen house while it is light and move inside then the thunder and lightning start coming through. My white hens look a little dingy but a few days of no rain and they are back to...

Laying eggs in the evening. Normal?

I stopped collecting in the morning when I check water. Almost all eggs we get are after 5 PM when water and give treats.

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

I got 17 today. It seems that I free range them, the next day the egg count goes down. I look around the places they roost when they are out and maybe one or two...

Quote: I found that several of mine like to hide in between our chimney and a shrub....By chance, I saw one leaving last week and found 9. So I check there every other day of so. 3 today. Sneaky little chicks....

Locating BOSS that won't break the bank

The local grain store is closing, so I had to go and look for another source. Luckily, another is opening back up just a few miles away. Picked up 40 lbs for $17 as well as other feed. Prices are good and they are a wealth of knowledge about birds. We are looking into meat chickens and turkeys...

    Bullseye eggs?

Hmmm... I get at least 4 eggs a week with speckles. No where near as pronounced as the pics, but they are there. I thought it was due to the breed of the chicken. Still the same on the inside...

Locating BOSS that won't break the bank

Quote: Silly question... Do you just plant BOSS from the store in the ground or do you have to buy "seed"? Told you it was silly... I don't think it's silly. I was wondering the same thing when I saw the price of BOSS at TSC. I was kinda sad reading this thread......I just bought a 20lb...

Can they be herded back into pen after a short foraging outing?

Quote: Or, like mine, they come running every time they see me step outside--they always think they're getting treats! Mine do the same thing. If they are out or at the other end of the pen, I round the corner and they all come running looking for a hand-out...

Locating BOSS that won't break the bank

Quote: I was thinking about that. I found a wild bird mix that had BOSS, other seeds, dried fruit and cracked corn. The ingredient that stopped me from buying it was Cayenne pepper.... Would that be OK for chickies??

What treat did your chickies get today?

left over lettuce, strawberries, a few small rolls that were heading south..Ran outta BOSS Our hens are vegetarian..so far. I read how you guys give them hamb, quail, and other meat...Guess I can't get past giving chickens meat. It's a hang up I guess.... I might change in the future, but...

Locating BOSS that won't break the bank

I started feeding BOSS to by hens and so far, they are loving life. I have only found it at Ocean State Job lot ($5 for 6 lbs) and one feed/pet store ($4 5 lbs) Which seems pretty expensive. My local grain store does not carry it, so I'm looking a for a source. Online? TSC? Appreciate the help !

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Quote: Sparhawk - how is this possible? do you think you missed some the days prior? Now that I think about it....Friday eve to Monday eve, so it's 3 days...ish. I got 36 hen fruit from 24 layers. They tend to lay afternoons and eves, so the mornings are usually 0-3/4.
