Our silkie rooster and standard cochins ( he was an enterprising rooster) made sneaky mutant babies. All had the crest and 2 of the 3 had black skin. The last actually had white. All had the extra toes. Nifty looking birds but we still calked them mutants
I was at work but husband and kid both said it was crazy. Understanding were females were together and male was hanging out. Husband was in kitchen doing tidying while she handled birds.
I think the hawk was canvassing. I have never seen one near our yard before and we let even our silkies free...
I wish I could say they weren't. Got my females. Lex was livid and heart broken. She had them in the backyard for a whole 5 minutes - normally they were in a dog run with a cover so predator proof. However rain made it manditory to clean and move to higher ground. Our male is holding strong and...
We had that happen last week. Freaking hawk had a discerning pallet. Ignored my $3 feed store chickens and decided both my female ducks were delish..
Kiddo was livid. She had let them out to clean their pen. Went into garage to grab clean bedding and came out to Hawk banquette. My drake...
Edited: I went out and checked the suspect hen. The discoloration is on her affected nails and only the underside of her foot. The upper part of her foot is perfectly black.
They are stunning. Here is a chick from our latest hatch came from my splash hen and blue rooster. I am gonna have to pull that Splash though if she keeps throwing these toes.. >.< Which is sucky because her crest and colors are stunning.. Just those **** toes.
More mad props to you for working on the partridge. That was too ambitious a project for us. Right now we are battling white toenails. I may have to completely pull that part of the line out. Too bad since I have a really pretty Splash just those darn toes. I will get pictures of them when the...
We have silkies and honestly our hatchery ($2.99) large fowl cochins have been better mommies and hatch birds. Silkies take a long time to mature. So if you want mothering instinct the cochin may be something to look into. They are relatively hardy birds too.
Hello and welcome. There are a bunch of us Washingtonians hanging out here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/717207/washingtonians-come-together-washington-peeps/41090
Check the neck feathers. Roosters tend to have long pointed neck feathers where hens are short and rounded. From picture it looks like hen; also comb and wattles look small. Another teller is checking for the spur. If your rooster is trying to make sweet sweet love to it; she is probably a hen...
Craigslist chickens can be very spotty. Many of them are either crossed with another breed or the colors are randomly cross so you don't have a clear idea of genetics Since we are breeding for BBS as well; we want to know exactly what we are breeding in and out. Brown being a big pain in the...
