Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Eek. So many drugs damage the liver, so I can see how that wouldn't have helped. That's going to have to be a careful diet. I hope it recovers fast

Yes, and Wednesday I have surgery and a biopsy to determine if I have uterine cancer. I am 47 and my body is falling apart already!

Dang. You need a break from the health issues

Those of you in King County, has this changed in the King County code?

"11.20.010 Age restriction for disposition or coloration. It is unlawful for any person, firm or corporation to sell, offer for sale, barter or give away any fowl under three weeks of age or any rabbit under two months of age as a pet, toy, premium or novelty, or to color, dye, stain or otherwise change the natural color of any such fowl or rabbit. (Res. 30346 § 1, 1965)."

I thought it was 3 days, not 3 weeks! Did this change or did I read it wrong in the past? I don't ever sell anything less than 3 days old so I can be sure it is off the yolk and thriving. Do I really need to wait 3 weeks? Are fowl considered pets?

It's that pet, toy, or novelty part. It's because people kill chicks and bunnies at easter by giving as "treats" in baskets. Then there is no heat or proper care of the baby animals and they are starved and squeezed to death.

Selling chicks as livestock is fine.

This is also why most stores won't sell less than 6 chicks and some will not sell chicks at all around Easter.

Okay, I know practically everybody who hatches chicks sells them before they are 3 weeks old. I guess if anyone asks if they are pets I need to say they are livestock. The codes are not always as clear as they should be.

I am starting up a mealworm colony again from beetles and pupae that can't be fed but will produce feeders in time. I never fed live mealworms to the birds for fear they would eat their way back out but I read that others do it without any problems. I will mainly be taking them in to the wildlife rescue for the birds there.

I also have plans to start up a colony of black soldier flies and I found a cabinet enclosed with plexiglass that was built as an aviary for parakeets. I was hoping to trap eggs from wild flies but I am going to have to order a bunch to get this thing started.

Who knew raising creepy crawlies would be so rewarding? I like the concept of free feed sources. I might even try growing fodder this year or sprouting BOSS. I want to use the duck water in a bad way but I may just use it for gardening and put the aquaponics project on hold for awhile longer. It feels like Spring is on the way!
