Okay, I know practically everybody who hatches chicks sells them before they are 3 weeks old. I guess if anyone asks if they are pets I need to say they are livestock. The codes are not always as clear as they should be.

One time I had a crazy woman come over to buy chicks. When she got here she changed her story and she said she only wanted one to be a pet for her kids. (The kids were very cute, by the way, but their mom was a nut job). Then she asked how big they would get, so I brought a 4 week old chick out from the other brooder. The woman just about ran out of the house, terrified of this huge monster of a bird. I sent them packing with no birds. Good thing since apparently I can't sell chicks as pets. LOL As she left she was asking to get the phone number of my friends that raise silkies. I told her to get a gerbil or a stuffed animal.

I have dealt with a few crazy nasty ladies too and it has made me more cautious. I try to educate people whenever possible but it is the know-it-alls who don't know what they are doing who don't listen anyway. I have raised so many healthy birds that sometimes I would rather just raise them myself and then sell them when they are not so dependent but people love babies to socialize and I prefer to sell them at 3 days old so people (especially kids) can enjoy watching them grow.

So I figured out why we only seem to catch female rats. The males don't seem to go near the chicken pens. The females think that the low silkie houses are a good place to make nests under. The dogs caught two males out in the tall grass and willows in the last couple days.

So every couple days I'm tilting the silkie houses and the dogs check under. Not seeing many at all now. Probably because we've been killing all the females.


Zeus isn't good on actually killing them but he's good at stopping escapes. Athena does the crunch. We found one in the daylight yesterday and the silkie hens were doing their ninja kicks to try and help chase it towards Athena when it tried to run.


The new houses will be up off the ground when I get them done.

I only have moles here very short tails one larger one all others have been small
as Moose my lab got one from the cats he ate the darn thing the bigger on I think Fear
had it or Snow killed it and not as many mole hills now
